In this lesson, students will get to explore an ecosystem from an UP CLOSE perspective!
Have you ever wondered what the world would look like from a bug's perspective?? Well today, we are going to find out! We are going to take an up close look at an ecoystem by going on a microhike! Along the way, we are going to be learning about ecosystems by answering these 3 questions:
What makes up an ecosystem?
Where does the energy for all living things in an ecosystem come from?
How are producers, consumers, and decomposers different? How are they similar?
Before we start, we need to get a better idea of what an ecosystem is! While you watch the video to the right, focus on the vocabulary!
Ecosystem
Producer
Consumer
Decomposer
Time to go on our microhike! In the first video below (Microhike Materials) we will learn what we need to bring with us on our Microhike. The second video is our MICRO adventure!
What are the parts of an ecosystem?
Where does the energy for all living things in an ecosystem come from?
How are producers, consumers, and decomposers different? How are they similar?
Below is my nature journal entry showing which animals, plants, and terrain I saw on my nature hike! Now, after watching my microhike AND with adult permission, you can go on your very own microhike! Make sure to write down your observations, take pictures, or draw what you see!
Use field guides, online keys or image searches to identify insects found on the Micro Hike. I've included a couple links to get you started:
1 slug
1 snail
1 spider
1 Squirrel
Lots of ants - not on camera
1 mushroom
Lots of Japanese stiltgrass
8 sweetgum seeds
Leaf litter - fallen leaves from the surrounding maple and sweetgum trees
The region is not extremely hilly unless looking close up
From a micro perspective, we went over small hills and fallen branches
Heavily littered with leaves!
Draw and label a picture of an ecosystem using the vocabulary terms:
Producer
Consumer
Decomposer
Write a story to accompany your drawing (HOT)
Separate each part of your drawing into “abiotic” and “biotic” categories (HOT)
Write a thank you note from a consumer to a producer thanking them for making the food that supports them
Make a histogram (7th grade math) of the plants/organisms you saw on your microhike to show how many of each organism you saw
Write a poem about your ecosystem
Take a picture or draw a picture, then write a caption for it using 2 out of our 6 vocabulary words (ecosystem, producer, consumer, decomposter, nonliving, living)
