I have a Dell Vostro 5590 laptop, recently updated drivers and stuff with the Support Assist, and now the internal microphone doesn't exist anymore. Any ideas on what happened? Is there something I did wrong during updates? What should I do to get my microphone back?

Okay so I had to press start and search "programs", which leads to a place outside of control panel where one can delete programs. I deleted RealTek's audio driver since it was for some reason a app or something, must've been some weird magic idk (laptops at this point are magic boxes that work idk.) I then had to restart my computer. Then, for a brief second, I had no output, meaning I had no microphone nor speakers. However, I then got a notification to restart as the system was reinstalling Intel's audio systems/drivers. Restarted and now everything's back to normal. Maxxaudio pro is popping back up, and microphone is back as well. Thank you all so much for your help!

Whether it is virtual meetings, learning from home, or talking to your teammates while gaming, clear audio from the microphone is important. Sound recording issues can occur whether you are using the integrated microphone on laptops, external, USB, or Bluetooth microphones or headsets. If you notice any of the following symptoms, the steps below will help you test the microphone.

A faulty device can cause audio or sound recording issues. Check if the microphone or headset with a built-in mic is working by following these steps. To test the internal microphone of your Dell laptop, run the SupportAssist microphone test.

The default audio output device is the device that Windows uses for recording sound. When you connect a microphone, USB headset, or Bluetooth headset with a built-in mic to your computer, you can select which device you want to use by default. Ensure that the correct device is selected and check the volume settings.

SMy issue is that the microphone on my Dell model N5110 (whatever that means, it was advertised as the Inspiron variety of Dell computers) has ceased to pick up sound. In fact, all microphones no longer pick up sound, I have two separate line-in mics that I was using to record audio, and prior to getting those I simply used the internal microphone for skype calls and the like. However, as of 2 weeks ago or so the people I was skype calling with could no longer hear me, and programs such as Audacity no longer register ANY audio of any kind from any of my 3 microphones. What concerns me is that, in the microphone control panel are (forget what its called), under the properties for each mic, the system tells me that "this device is working properly". This also applies to Skype and Audacity, both of which inform me that my microphone is working fine. However, the microphone obstinately refuses to pick up ANY sound whatsoever, and since I have 2 separate line-in varieties as well as the internal mic I don't think it's the hardware. My question is, is there any software I could be missing or drivers that I need to update in order to fix this issue? (all drivers are up-to-date)

So, I had indeed made sure to set each of my mics as the defaul when I was testing them, both the line-in and the internal mic. When I went to the sound recorder, it picked up no sound-just like when I tried to use Audacity or Skype. However, the system again told me that the microphone was working properly... perhaps its an issue with my soundcard? or could I just be missing a driver somewhere?

So, as we suspected it was a corrupted audio driver! Since the driver was never missing or out-of-date, my driver updates didn't fix the issue. However, a deletion and reinstallation worked. I still can't get my line-in mic to work, but the internal array is working beautifully, and I probably just haven't configured my line-in properly yet. Thanks for the help, I consider this issue solved!

Probably he is calling it that because the name used by the IDT driver is "Microphone/Line In" with a picture of a microphone next to it, as shown in this screen shot. That is surely misleading to people who are unfamiliar with with audio terminology.

Also, an interesting update on the issue... After I powered on my computer this morning (post shut-down last night), My microphones were both not working again! I was rather surprised by this, as yesterday my internal microphone had worked perfectly... Evidently restarting the computer did something to the audio software AGAIN. So I again reinstalled the driver software, following the instructions posted previously, and... nothing. It's as if I never fixed anything, with the computer telling me that the drivers and software are both working properly but the microphones not picking up sound. So close, yet still more issues... Setting defaults, disabling mic enhancements, re-enabling them, and reinstalling the drivers have all now not worked. Is there any hope for this or is it unsolvable?

Ok, so the mics weren't functional on the other account either. However, THIS time when I went to uninstall, delete, and reinstall the audio drivers, I was told that the ones from the link you gave me above were incompatible with my operating system. (evidently they are for windows XP, while I utilize 64 bit windows 7). My thought process is that perhaps I had a corrupted audio driver initially, reinstalled the drivers but the drivers were incompatible with my OS, leaving me with incorrect drivers again. Do you have a link to the proper windows 7 drivers, or any (more) advice? Thank you for your patience!

This uninstalled the driver, asked for a reboot, reinstalled the driver, and asked for a reboot once again. Still, the mic was too quiet. Next, I manually installed Waves MaxxAudio from -us/p/waves-maxxaudio-pro-for-dell/9nb9srtl2kpt?rtc=1&activetab=pivot:overviewtab .

I'd roll back the driver, but of course, Windows acts like there was no previous driver to roll back to, even though I can see in the hardware events tab that the previous driver was installed last November.

The next time I have the laptop in front of me and have some time, I'll plan to delete the audio device from Device Manager, then restart, then manually install drivers (either an older version I find on the web or the one provided by Dell). But I have no clue if it will work or if Windows Update will still override the driver at some point and break it again. (I already had the ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate value in the registry set to block Windows Update driver updates, but apparently that wasn't actually respected by MS.)

Hi I didn't achive fix waves, however if u choose the generic microsft driver instead of realtek, the headphones work properly. Furthermore you have to stop automatic driver installation otherwise windows will set realtek as default driver again.

I have Dell Vostro 1400 windows vista 32 bit. The built in microphone does not work nor the external one (headphone mic). In troubleshooting window everything looks fine & working. When I speak in the sound recorder the sound bar does not move up.

1. Click Start

 2. Click All Programs

 3. Click the Dell Webcam

 4. Click Webcam Central to start the program.

 5. In the lower right-hand corner of the Dell Webcam Central window, click the drop-down arrow next to the picture of the microphone. Select Microphone. Make sure it is not muted.

Hi I am also having an issue with my old Dell Inspiron 640m. The Audio is Sigmatel High Definition. I upgraded my OS to win 7 and it works fine though not advisable for this type of model. All of a sudden my microphone did not work. So I tried system restore no go. So I downgraded my OS to Vista 32 thought that mic would work but apparently its not working still even my usb webcam with microphone is not working as well. I can see my mic in the recording tab however its not receiving any signal only buzz and static sounds. I reinstall the Audio driver still not working on the Recording Tab it shows both mics are working but not picking up any signal. I tried the control panel to setup the mic but its not detecting it the Green bar is not moving regardless of which mic option I should choose. Tried it on Skype still didnt work. Is there a way that I can resolved this issue? Thanks.

If still not working it could be a hardware failure. Surely you no longer have the Dell Diagnostics on your hard drive but back then the laptops shipped with a Utility or Resources cd with the Diagnostics on it. The tests included a mic test for both internal and external mics. The difference between these tests and PC Checkup tests is that failure in Dell Diagnostics means a hardware failure, but in PC Checkup it could be software because it uses the installed drivers and Windows.

When I speak into it i dont see any signal at all, I used the USB mic same thing no signal. For the USB mic at the Record Tab section the bar is totally Green but no activity when I speak Up. The sigmatel on the other hand dont show any green bar at all but it shows both have the status of "working" so not sure what to do? BTW, the usb mic i have is a plug and play and no drivers needed it works on the other computer.

It has a post on the left side with mic and audio, it works fine when and suddenly it can detect the microphone but wont receive any signals. I did reinstall my OS to Vista since this old lappy doesnt support Win 7, I have done reinstall all the drivers in orders via the side ot Del. Still didnt work I have run Dell diagnostics and everything went ok no HW failure.

When you insert the mic plug into the laptop's jack socket, the laptop does not know if it is a mic or a line-in, so you have to tell it. Go to the Control Panel>Sigmatel and open that. You should find an option to "allow popups" or something like that. Check that. When you next plug in the mic you should get a dialog box that asks you to select the type of device, so select "microphone". That will reconfigure the jack to work with a mic.

I've done all those with no luck. So last night I've downgraded my OS from Win 7, Vista and now I'm using XP hoping to get the microphone work. Unfortunately samething. The mic is detected and it shows device is enabled however, it still wont detect any signal. The Sigmatel shows popup and I've selected mic still not working. Not sure what to do now. :emotion-9: I've ran the diagnostics again and same thing all HW are fine. ff782bc1db
