The purpose of the school counseling program is to provide the support that students need to be successful academically, socially, and emotionally.
As a school counselor, I work directly with students, staff, and parents. I coordinate school and community resources in order to assist in maximizing the academic success and social functioning of the students. I visit each classroom in the specials rotation and our curriculum focuses of core components of Social Emotional Learning.
In my role, I advocate for all students to ensure equal access to school programs and resources, while working to reduce or eliminate barriers that impede students from reaching their full potential.
My job is not the same as a licensed counselor at an office. I do not have the same licensure as they do. My licensure focuses primarily on students and issues that may arise in the educational setting. I cannot conduct traditional therapy sessions. I can meet with students in small groups or individually, but if a student needs ongoing counseling from a licensed therapist, I can make that referral and talk to parents about their options.
Sometimes I am a listening ear, sometimes I am the first point of contact for a student or family in crisis. Whatever the situation may be, I try to help each student and their family have access to the resources, skills, and support that they may need to thrive.
