For this project we were asked to create a system which could use no power other than the sun to accomplish a specific goal. Our team chose to heat water so that we could heat food (a hot dog to be specific) to a desirable temperature.
All drawings on this page are my own and were contributions to the group's work. Below is a simple walkthrough of the project. More photos and some videos of the final artifact, as well as some documentation can be found at the bottom of this page.
Before we arrived at the problem we wished to solve, we went through a few different possible problems. A preliminary thought was to make an oven.
Once we settled on the idea of heating water to warm food, we considered several ways to do this.
We settled on the design below for our final system.
Below are some more photos of our fabricated system.
Taking the temperature of the water.
A view of the focused sun hitting the water vessel.
Application of the reflective mylar film.
The following videos show the system bringing water up to a bubbling temperature and igniting cardboard respectively.
