The master cylinder is the heart of a hydraulic brake system. It converts the mechanical force from your foot on the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure, which then activates the brakes at each wheel (J.D. Power, 2023).

1. Brake pedal is pressed.
A pushrod pushes into the master cylinder.
2. Piston(s) compress brake fluid.
Pressure builds up in the cylinder.
3. Fluid is pushed into brake lines.
Travels to calipers or wheel cylinders.
4. Brakes activate.
Pads or shoes press against rotors or drums.
One piston, older systems (less safe)
Two pistons; if one fails, the other still works
Soft or sinking brake pedal (internal leak)
Brake fluid leak (at the master or reservoir)

Uneven braking or reduced pressure
In a dual-circuit system, if a leak develops in the rear brake circuit, the front brakes can still function—giving you a chance to stop safely.
