Artificial Intelligence has played a significant role in the work we do as educators for some time now, but everything changed in Novemeber of 2022 when ChatGPT first became publicly available. It was shortly after its release that I realized the immensity of this tool's capabilities, and since then, I have devoted tremendous effort not only in building my own understanding of these ever-evolving tools, but providing fellow educators with guidance and resources to help them innovate upon the work they do and give our learners the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in this new Age of AI. Below are examples of just some of the content I have developed.
I founded Codaptive Labs LLC in 2022, recognizing the tremendous role that Artificial Intelligence was going to play within education. Through my company, I have partnered with the OpenRN Project, Chippewa Valley Technical College, Calhoun Community College, along with others to delivery professional development training and resources focused on understanding and leveraging generative AI. What's more, my company has providing instructional technology and designer services to create virtual simulations that utilize not only AI text-based content, but AI generated images, audio, and video.
This is work that no one else had been doing at the time, and the results of that work can be seen in the exceptional pass rates of students who have utilized the OpenRN curriculum.
The art of prompting has become a key skill with emerging AI technologies. On my website, you will find a library of prompts that I have developed. The use cases they serve are quite various, but all of them are relevant within the context of education. I make these prompts freely available to visitors of my site, both to help show the capabilities of the AI technologies as well as to give educators a starting point to help the design their own prompts that serve the needs of their own context.
Part of the OpenRN Project was the development of interactive nursing simulations using the H5P platform. While we did great work without the need for AI through early parts of the grant, once tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Play.ht, and D-ID became available, we were suddenly able to develop far more. The response from this work has been overwelmingly positive, and it goes to show the power when combining multiple AI technologies together in a cohesive manner.
The implications for AI in education and society as whole are substantial. It is important that we facilitate mindful conversations on the ethical implementation and utilization of these technologies at all levels of our organizations. With this in mind, I created a series of ethical dilemmas, each with the use of AI as a focus. Rather than trying to prescribe solutions that may not suit every context, my goal is instead to help bring awareness to these issues so that others can consider how they would apply in the work they do.
The evolving capabilities of AI tools necessitates a reevaluation of how we facilitate learning. Many traditional assessment methods are not up to the task of being an accurate measure of a learner's comprehension. At the same time, we also need to give learners the chance to interact with these technologies in a structured manner that builds literacy and fosters critical thinking skills. With all of this in mind, I have developed a few examples of assessment strategies that faculty can take and remix to suit their needs.
In order to better help express the wide range of capabilities that tools like ChatGPT provide, I developed this resource that was shared with faculty at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California Irvine as part of a professional development training session focused on the topic of generative AI.
