Session 64
Grave Circumstances II
Grave Circumstances II
During the second night of their journey, the party encountered a savage band of wild muls circling around two riders atop frightened crodlus, engaged in a tumultuous skirmish. The muls, powerful half-dwarf, half-human hybrids, ran on foot, aggressively shouting and swinging weapons in what seemed like a brutal game. Among them lay a fallen raider, evidence of the conflict's intensity.
"We fought our way out of Raam!" bellowed the imposing mul leader. "We earned our freedom! If we want to plunder these traders, what business is it of yours? You should just be thankful that we don't turn our attention toward you!"
Safi, quick to act, summoned crodlus to surround the muls and commanded them to stand down, cautiously moving closer with the intent to defuse the situation. Karnos, wielding his blasting crystal, launched an attack on one of the muls while empowering his allies. Gid'Wei positioned himself defensively, shield raised, ready to dodge any incoming assaults.
The wild muls retaliated with a psychic onslaught, stunning Shiv and Shank, and swiftly dispatching three summoned crodlus before vanishing from sight. Anvar, recognizing their vulnerability to charisma-based effects, approached cautiously. Safi transformed into a hatori and burrowed underground, preparing for a tactical advantage.
As the battle unfolded, Karnos fortified his allies with intellect fortress, shielding them from mental attacks. The muls reappeared, targeting Karnos and Anvar, their strikes relentless but met with resilient defenses. Anvar provided crucial first aid and healing support, stabilizing his fallen comrades amid the chaotic fray.
Shiv recovered from the stun, rallying with second wind and strategic maneuvers. Shank, fueled by rage, struck fiercely but only hit air where the muls had been, prompting him to switch tactics. Safi regrouped with his allies as the remaining crodlus protected the merchants.
In a desperate turn, the muls unleashed a devastating psychic assault, incapacitating Gid'Wei, Shiv, and Safi. Anvar swiftly administered first aid and healing scrolls, bringing them back from the brink. Shank unleashed vicious attacks, felling two muls, while Karnos employed psychic blasts to stun others, inadvertently hitting Safi in the process.
Despite the setbacks, Shiv pressed on, targeting and eliminating the leader of the muls with calculated strikes and decisive action. With the tide turning, Shank and Karnos eliminated the remaining stunned muls, securing the battlefield. Their victory was hard-won, with casualties and wounds to tend to, but they stood triumphant against the fierce adversaries.
After fending off a brutal attack by a wild mul raiding band, the pair of travellers, nikaal traders known for their distinctive purple scales and reptilian eyes, gained renown in the northern territory. Their encounter with the muls, initially minding their own business, turned into a fierce battle where they emerged victorious amidst the swirling sands and harsh cries of combat.
In recognition of their valor, the nikaal traders bestowed upon the group a reward—a ceramic coin marked with the sigil of House Azeth. This intricately crafted token granted them free access to Azeth's Rest, a fortified trade village nestled around a lush oasis, where commerce thrived under the vigilant eyes of mercenaries funded by House Azeth. Additionally, each member of the group received 25 ceramic pieces, a small fortune in the arid lands of Athas.
This generous gift not only affirmed their status among the traders but also solidified their reputation as capable defenders and allies in the unforgiving wilderness. The gleaming coin, a tangible symbol of their newfound standing, served as a reminder of their triumph over adversity and the perils that awaited them on their continuing journey across the sun-scorched plains.
As they began to drift into sleep, a strange noise disrupted their peace, distant yet unnervingly loud—a persistent chewing sound, occasionally punctuated by a deep belch, echoing through the night. Startled awake, they traced the noise less than half a mile away to a colossal wagon-fortress that appeared suddenly, its presence ominous and out of place.
The massive wagon, devoid of mekillots and seemingly immobile for years, emanated the source of the unsettling noises—a banquet hall within. Illuminated by lantern light, the scene inside revealed chaos: overturned furniture, spilled food, and the remnants of a lavish feast scattered about. At the center sat a bloated figure, a merchant lord turned undead, gorging himself on food with grotesque abandon.
Recognizing the danger, Gid'Wei sensed the creature's undead nature using divine sense, alarming the group. Karnos's lens confirmed necrotic magic permeating the wagon, while Shiv's insightful abilities gleaned crucial details about their foe. Attempts to dispel the magic failed, and Anvar's diagnosis revealed vulnerabilities rather than immunities. With resolve, they decided to confront the undead creature.
Strategically positioning themselves, they engaged in a fierce battle within the caravan. Shank led the assault, landing several blows despite the creature's vicious counterattacks. Safi summoned moonbeam to assail the undead from afar, while Anvar stood ready to heal. Gid'Wei's attempt to turn the unholy met resistance, but he bravely joined the fray atop the banquet table. Shiv, using his agility and strength, grappled the undead, pulling him into the open for a decisive strike.
With Shank's sentinel prowess delivering the final blow, the caravan fell silent, the eerie calm replacing the earlier chaos. Their victory over the undead horror marked a harrowing yet pivotal moment on their journey through the unforgiving wastelands of Athas.
Arriving in relative safety, they approached Azeth's Rest, a fortified village that shimmered like an oasis amidst the harsh Tablelands terrain. Enclosed by sturdy sandstone walls and guarded by vigilant mercenaries atop looming guard towers, the village stood resilient against raids from the Bandit States to the west.
Inside the protective walls, Azeth's Rest hummed with activity. The bustling market square served as the heart of the village, where merchants hawked their goods under makeshift awnings. Amidst murmured negotiations and the clink of coins, travelers of diverse backgrounds sought respite and supplies in this vital trade hub.
Despite the village's defensive posture, Azeth's Rest offered a welcoming sanctuary for those willing to pay. The well-maintained oasis provided a refreshing break from the arid surroundings, albeit at a cost. Amidst their stay, they gathered rumors: Kurn, a hidden city of prosperity in the White Mountains, faced internal strife among its ruling elite. Eldaarich, isolated in the Sea of Silt, was governed by the mad king Daskinor, rumored to be influenced by a mysterious artifact.
During their visit to House Azeth, after a night's rest and over breakfast, they accepted a mission to deliver a message to Talid of the Ravagers, a bandit group whose raids had recently escalated, possibly due to the chaotic Angry Winds affecting their behavior.
A couple of hours after departing Azeth's Rest, they found themselves enveloped by the swirling wall of sand and dust that perpetually dominated the western horizon. Emerging from this sandy veil were nearly two dozen raiders, a motley crew of men and women of various races, armed to the teeth with vicious weaponry. Some rode atop kanks, while others manned strange wheeled vehicles adorned with sails, their presence imposing against the barren landscape.
The raiders wasted no time in surrounding the travelers, their weapons gleaming ominously under the relentless sun. Among them, a striking female elf with short, wind-tousled hair and a face adorned in fierce tribal paint rode forward on a sleek kank. Her voice carried authority and curiosity as she addressed the group, her gaze assessing each member. "Are you the travelers who vanquished the wild muls of Raam?" she queried, her tone holding a mixture of respect and intrigue. "Talid of Ravage wishes to parley with you."
After spotting the massive wall of swirling dust and sand on the horizon, towering nearly a mile into the sky, the group braced themselves for what lay ahead. The female elf guide grinned with confidence, remarking on the spectacle of the storm that dwarfed anything seen in their homeland.
Entering the dust wall, the travelers proceeded cautiously, sensing danger lurking behind them within the blinding sands. Anvar readied himself for a potential grapple, while Gid'Wei prepared to strike at any unseen threat. Shank, fueled by rage, scanned the surroundings for any movement. Karnos, using his psionic abilities, transformed into a mastryial and burrowed beneath the sand, while Safi summoned goraks to defend the group.
Suddenly, a mastryial emerged from the sand, swiftly dispatching two goraks and stunning Safi with its formidable stinger before retreating into obscurity. Anvar and Gid'Wei readied themselves defensively, Shank positioned strategically for an attack, and Karnos surfaced to clarify his identity to the bewildered Safi.
As Mutalla warned of the mastryials' tactic to drag prey away, Anvar tended to Safi's injuries and stood ready to defend. Gid'Wei protected Shiv's flank, while Shank sought an opening to strike. Karnos rejoined the group and surprised Safi, who mistook him for an enemy in the chaos. Safi, explaining to Mutalla that the goraks were allies, prepared another thorn whip spell.
Shiv and Shank coordinated their movements, preparing for the mastryial's next strike. The creature reappeared, aiming for Shiv with its pincers and stinger but missing. Mutalla, sensing the group's hesitation, urged them onward and led a charge towards the mastryial's last known location. Anvar and Gid'Wei followed her lead, steeling themselves for combat.
Karnos, appearing as a mastryial, startled Mutalla, who attacked him before realizing his telepathic reassurances. Safi transformed into a hatori and attempted to strike the mastryial but missed. The goraks closed in, landing two solid hits. Shiv, confused by Karnos's appearance, grappled him and dealt a series of blows with his hammer.
Shank moved to assist Shiv, attacking Karnos and forcing him to revert to his original form. Shank then engaged the true mastryial, landing a hit despite being stung by its poisonous stinger. Mutalla finally got a clear shot and struck the mastryial with her longsword, following up with an action surge that scored two more hits. Anvar successfully grappled the creature, allowing Gid'Wei to deliver the finishing blow with his rapier.
Meanwhile, the other group of ravagers fared poorly against another mastryial, losing ten of their twelve members in the struggle.
