Session 62
The Primordial
The Primordial
The Veiled Alliance fleet had crossed the perilous Sea of Silt, determined to end the threat of the stirring primordial. Facing opposition from Broken Builders, mad cultists, and other sinister forces, the fleet had prevailed, though many allies were lost along the way. Despite these sacrifices, the Alliance gained vital information and support for the impending confrontation.
Ahead lay the Isle of Ash, but it was obscured by a vast storm of dust, ash, salt, and smoke. Sailors and mages assured the fleet that this was no natural storm. Scouts reported that the storm completely surrounded the island, remaining ominously stationary. As the fleet approached the curtain of ash and fire, they beheld a crumbling wall of salt and ash, veined with fire, stretching from the silt up into the sky.
A ship flying the colors of Balic was the first to brave the curtain. As it neared the wall, energy pulsed out, warping the ship. The crew's screams pierced the howling winds as the entire vessel turned to ash, disintegrating into the storm. The remains of the skimmer coalesced into dusty humanoid forms, attacking the nearest ship.
Behind the fleet, light pulsed from the Veiled Alliance command ship. Mahlanda burst from her cabin, soaring into the sky. With one hand, she wove a spell, directing it at the curtain. With her other hand, she tapped her temple, blending psionic and arcane power. At her command, gaps just large enough for the ships to pass through perforated the curtain.
Though a way through was now visible, pulses of dangerous elemental energy poured from these holes. Consulting with their allies, the fleet believed assessing and interacting with the curtain from a distance would be safer, keeping further from its corrupting influence. However, moving up to the curtain, though far more dangerous, would allow more options for direct interaction.
As they approached the curtain, the crew alerted that the ship had become unresponsive. Energy from the curtain flared, causing the mast and sail to smolder and smoke. The deck pitched despite the lack of motion, and one crew member was thrown into the curtain, quickly dissolving into nothing. As the heroes acted to disrupt and resist the primordial’s corruption, they also had to contend with their own partially corrupted vessel, battling against both time and the dark magic threatening to consume them all.
Morhen initiated the assault, perceiving a vulnerability in the curtain and signaling it to his companions. He then expended some of his primal power, successfully weakening the curtain. Fazanna failed to discern the curtain's magical nature through insight but managed to use her arcane power to weaken it. Shank's attempt to physically pry apart the curtain failed, resulting in his corruption, but his insight bolstered his friends' defenses. Anvar used his knowledge of natural medicine to weaken the curtain and provided insight to aid his allies.
Hamra perceived additional weaknesses and utilized his Calm the Storm ability to further weaken the curtain. Zyel battered the curtain with her magical club but was cursed with each blow. The corrupted ship deck retaliated, flinging Zyel into Fazanna, increasing Zyel’s corruption to stage three. The deck then pitched, hitting three allies and corrupting Fazanna. Shiv used his strength to weaken the curtain, perceiving more weaknesses in the process. The ship's corrupted mast lashed out at Shank, corrupting and restraining him.
Morhen used his Calm the Storm ability again, weakening the curtain and gaining further insight. Fazanna, struck by her corruption, failed to use her arcane abilities, worsening her condition. Shank, also suffering, flailed at the sails restraining him, eventually freeing himself. Anvar vaccinated Zyel, reducing her corruption and gaining greater defensive insight. Hamra cast Aura of Purity, bolstering his allies with waves of flame while perceiving more weaknesses in the curtain.
Zyel, weakened by corruption, managed to shake off some effects and prepared to dodge incoming attacks. The corrupted deck flung Morhen at Shiv, corrupting Morhen. Shiv flexed his muscles, ripping apart more of the curtain. The mast, corrupted again, lashed at Morhen, but he quickly escaped its entanglement. Fazanna's corruption dropped her unconscious. Shank, weakened by corruption, failed to damage the curtain and worsened his state.
Anvar vaccinated Zyel again before applying first aid to revive Fazanna. Hamra used his Gift of Fire ability to weaken the curtain further. Zyel finished pulling Morhen from the entangled ropes. The corrupted deck's attempts to fling were deflected, and everyone avoided its pitch. Shiv, summoning all his strength one last time, ripped the curtain to shreds.
They had done it! They forced their way through the curtain. Lookouts reported a brief respite, allowing them and a few other skimmers a moment to regain their composure as they pressed on.
After a brief respite, they pressed on. As they moved past the ash, dust, and smoke of the curtain, the shores of their destination, the Isle of Ash, emerged fiercely from the Sea of Silt. The island was riddled with large rents and fissures spewing magma, fire, smoke, and ash. Though most of the island was unsafe, the crew spotted a relatively safe landing area.
As they approached the shallow coastline, the island heaved as if it were a great beast, shuddering in rage at their trespass. A large swath of stone broke free, forming into an arm ending in a massive hand with five unnaturally long fingers trailing ash, dust, and magma. Farther along, another Alliance ship was being pummeled to splinters by a similar, alien fist. Their pilot began to move the ship away as the crew leapt into action. “Jump for it! We’ll come back for you when we can!” the pilot shouted. They jumped, and their ship retreated to a safe distance.
As they prepared to battle the approaching primordial hand, they saw other hands in the distance, moving toward heroes from other ships. A great fist of stone and magma, larger than the others, stretched into the sky, crushing Sartaj in its grasp. She screamed, and a burst of arcane and psionic energy exploded outward from her, shattering the fingers. The unnatural arm retracted back into the island.
Morhen began the assault, flinging three sling bullets and dropping one of the fingers. The dusty thumb dashed in next to them. Shiv dove into battle, killing one finger and aiding Fazanna in their defense, crushing another finger with a mighty blow. Hamra cast Radiance of the Dawn, wounding the giant primordial palm. A giant fist of stone rose into the sky, then swept down toward the group, large enough to catch all of them. Mahlanda saw this development and offered aid, but they refused, taking the devastating blow. Shank was flung far into the silt. The primordial palm used a crushing blow against Hamra and rejuvenated the fallen fingers.
Anvar diagnosed the palm and used first aid on Fazanna. Fazanna then used her burst of speed to get behind the palm and struck twice with her shadowblade, scoring one great hit. Shank rushed back into battle. Two magma fingers grappled Shiv and Morhen, dragging them far from the palm. Two ash fingers grappled and suffocated Hamra and Zyel, also dragging them away. Morhen escaped his grapple, only to be grappled again, but managed to fire off three arrow shots, destroying the finger grasping Hamra. Morhen then empowered Fazanna. The dust thumb grappled Anvar. Shiv action surged but failed to hit, nearly giving up.
Hamra called upon his spiritual guardians, tiny floating motes of flame, and ran around the fingers, destroying the remaining ones. The palm swatted Fazanna, knocking her back, and rained a crushing blow on Hamra, who tried but failed to use his Flicker of Life ability. Fazanna rushed to the palm and struck four times with her shadowblade, using her Moment of Perfection ability before using Action Surge to encase the rejuvenated fingers and Shank in a fireball. Shank, back in battle, raged and struck the palm, hitting two of six times before empowering Shiv. Zyel hit the palm once before using a flurry of blows, critically hitting and stunning it.
Morhen shifted his Hunter's Mark to the palm, hitting once out of three tries. Shiv, still raging, struck the palm three times, hitting once and shattering it using his precision. The remaining fingers changed, and Shiv threw a rock at one, missing. Hamra again used his spiritual guardians and hit two fingers, but they did not fall. Anvar moved closer to Hamra's spiritual guardian protection and applied first aid to Hamra. Fazanna called upon her Bladesong ability and killed one finger with two shadowblade attacks. A magma finger grappled Shank. An ash finger hit Hamra, while another attacked Zyel, who redirected the attack, causing it to kill an ally finger. Zyel recklessly attacked a finger, hitting one of three attempts. Shank killed one finger and hit two more. Morhen killed the last of the fingers with an arrow shot.
Shiv heard the skimmer pilot’s voice in his mind. "I, I don’t know what to say. The druids are telling us that Gom-ul-Dur IS the island – the entire island! We’re waiting here for now; send up a signal if you need us to pick you up. Onward, for Blood and Glory!"
Ahead, the rock of the Isle of Ash gave way to a swirling miasma of ash, silt, and magma. A dozen serpentine necks of burning rock and salt connected the miasma to a dozen huge, mouthless heads, each with four rows of eyes burning with primal fire. The primordial's multiple heads surrounded Sartaj, her psionics and spells slowly succumbing to the relentless physical and elemental attacks.
As the group drew closer, all but four of Gom-ul-Dur’s heads broke off their battle against Sartaj to engage them and their Veiled Alliance allies. The surface beneath them began to break away, leaving them on one of the few remaining large rock outcroppings surrounded by the primordial miasma. The rock outcropping drifted toward the center of the island, drawn toward the approaching heads of Gom-ul-Dur. The distinctive thunks of catapult and ballista sounded from the ash and dust surrounding the island, as the Veiled Alliance fleet ships provided what assistance they could. One head turned toward the group, its eight eyes blazing bright, as the rock beneath them began to crumble. Spread across two rocks in the miasma, the group was split.
The head slammed against Morhen, knocking him back and prone into the toxic miasma. Then it lashed out at Hamra with its ash reaper attack, and attempted to encase those on the rock in magma but failed. Morhen, in the miasma and under the sands ablaze aura of the head, suffered significant damage before climbing atop the rock and striking the head with three deadly blows, one of them critical, aided by his hunter's mark. Shank followed, striking the head with four more hits, one of them critical, and dropped the head. Fazanna, with nothing to hit, cast mirror image and empowered Morhen. Zyel waited and dodged before another head appeared and smacked Morhen in revenge for his previous deadly blows. The head also used ash weeper against Shank.
Anvar diagnosed the head, finding no vulnerabilities. Hamra called upon his primal power to bless himself and his two close allies. Shiv dashed across the deadly miasma to move to the other rock, hitting the head once of twice. The new head again slammed the prone Morhen in the miasma, ending his life. The head then used its fiery maw ability to hit Shank, Shiv, and Hamra. Waluigi appeared on the furthest rock to help his allies. Shank lashed out at the head four times, scoring two hits before activating his stage 3 pyroclastic technique. Fazanna used Toll the Dead from afar, but it had no effect. Zyel entered the toxic miasma, drawing close to the head and scoring a critical hit along with another hit, then used her flurry of blows for two more hits, including another critical hit before empowering Shank. The head then slammed Shank and used ash weeper on Shiv before trying to move out of range of the group's deadly blows.
Anvar diagnosed that the head was still healthy. Hamra then telekinetically shoved the prone Shank onto the rock. Shiv used his second wind to heal himself and shook off the effects of the head's attacks. The head then slammed Waluigi. Shank braved the miasma, and hastily dashed to the head, scoring hit after hit, finally destroying it.
Smoke poured from the gashes and wounds they had carved into the Head of Gom-ul-Dur. A silent roar of pain and fury echoed through their minds. A moment later, the familiar voice of Mahlanda followed: “Well done, my friends, well done!”
In the wake of their great victory, the group faced one last, heart-wrenching decision. To seal away the primordial and its elemental wrath, they were presented with three harrowing choices:
First, they could sacrifice Mahlanda, the steadfast ally whose guidance and power had been instrumental in their triumph.
Second, they could plant the seeds of life, creating a mighty grove of trees that would need to be nurtured and watched over by Mahlanda for years to come, binding her to the task indefinitely.
Finally, they could choose the ultimate sacrifice—giving their own lives. By doing so, the seeds of life would be taken to Altaruk, where a new, powerful grove would grow, ensuring the safety of the land but at the cost of their existence.
As they deliberated, the weight of their choices pressed heavily upon them, knowing that the future of their world hung in the balance.
