Session 48
Balancing Shadows
Balancing Shadows
Urunjira and Tejasvin, the eladrin allies, escorted the players through the Land Within the Winds to Bremil Pass, a narrow gap between massive mountains that protected the Crescent Forest. From that distance, towering spires were visible jutting out of a city along the horizon to the southwest. The players and their companions joined a caravan traveling to the city. They approached Nibenay in search of information on the artifact they had recovered. During their travel, they carefully increased their bond with the minds that made up the psychic 'artifact construct'. However, they still had not learned how Hamanu had used the artifact to pay the levy. They hoped someone within the City-State knew where to locate the Druids of ancient Yaramuke. According to the eladrin of Samarthia, the druids fled into the Crescent Forest during the creation of the Artifact and may have the answers they sought.
The City of Spires lay at the foot of a cliff near the Stormclaw Mountains. An unimaginably lush and large jungle, the Crescent Forest, lay to the north and west of Nibenay. As they approached the City-State, they passed along many hot springs and palm groves that surrounded it for miles. They had heard about the Plain of Smoking Water, but only now did they realize the large expanse of bubbling hot pools that seemed to dot the landscape.
The main road leading into Nibenay was lined with huge statues, each with so much detail they seemed impossibly lifelike. The statues all depicted a warrior of great strength, most likely the Sorcerer-King. A harmonious melody that was barely audible as they initially saw the City-State had been growing louder and clearer as they drew near. They were able to make out dancers and musicians on the balconies above the gates. The music was so hypnotic that anyone traveling along the road, including slaves, merchants, guards, and even the dumbest of animals, seemed to be swaying to the seductive rhythm of the music.
Their vantage point allowed them to see that a large portion of Nibenay appeared to be lying in ruin from the Western District to a large tower along the north cliff-side. It was difficult to see much more from that distance; however, there appeared to be quite a bit of activity around the area.
The huge statues lining the road were called the Omnipotent Receivers. The hot springs surrounding Nibenay were fed by underground aquifers. The land was divided into neat quilt-like areas run by the nobility who controlled the sale of all water in Nibenay. There was not much for the protagonists to explore at that point considering the surrounding area was owned by the nobles of Nibenay and straying off the road was prohibited.
They learned by asking around the caravan and other travelers along the road about the ruins they saw in the Western District, they only heard the following rumors: The Dragon destroyed the city, Nibenay made the Dragon leave, buildings were ripped from their foundations by the Dragon’s hands, and screams of the dying could still be heard amongst the ruins. Two entrances were visible from their vantage point: The Mekillot Gate, which was most commonly used and followed a large stone road to the Sage’s Square (the main market area), and the Reservoir Gate, which was used only by the Templars and army of Nibenay.
There were two additional gates: the West Gate, a smaller gate leading to the road along the Crescent Forest and to Gulg; and the South Gate, which was mainly avoided due to its proximity to the Hill District where most people feared for both their lives and their purses.
Inside the gate, the large stone thoroughfare led from the city gates toward the center of the city and passed through the Sages’ Square, which contained the homes and businesses of the great merchant houses. The buildings and walls were adorned with bas-relief covering almost every surface, depicting the history and folklore of Nibenay.
In the heart of the city stood a large towering spire, the Naggaramakam. The walled sub-city appeared to be a massive keep with walls over 50 feet high. The tops of large trees with a blue luster to their bark, known as agafari trees, could be seen rising from behind the walls. It was the dominion of the Shadow King and his wives.
The city was extremely busy, and every street other than the main road appeared too small to accommodate mounts. Merchant stalls, banners, and other displays hung across almost every street. The vast amount of people bargaining at every stall made the entire city claustrophobic.
The variety of items in the merchant stalls indicated that it was possible to find almost any item from the Athasian tablelands. Trying to find anyone, specifically someone in the Veiled Alliance, appeared like it would take some time.
As the Starlight Pageant began, people crowded the streets to watch as the processions started along the High Road and proceeded toward the Sages’ District. The templars’ illusions were grand, engulfing every street and the sky above the entire city. The music carried down each street, and the people started to sway in rhythm to its sounds once again.
Amidst the festivities, players observe or overheard various details:
Young female dancers, known as apsara, made their way from the Naggaramakam along the High Road just inside the city wall. Their performance depicted the folklore of Nibenay in a special ballet.
Jugglers and acrobats entertained the audience between the ballet sessions.
The Starlight Pageant will last all night, with illusions filling the streets and sky, intricately woven into the ballet by mages to enhance the performance.
Rumors circulated that the Veiled Alliance observed the procession from the shadows.
Those trained in Arcana could discern that the wisps of blue fog were illusions.
Once they had absorbed this information, they faced a decision as the main procession of the pageant approached. How should they proceed in their quest to possibly engage with the Veiled Alliance? Should they attempt to draw attention, search patiently, or wait for the Alliance to potentially make the first move? After a short debate they decided to wait and watch, hoping to get noticed.
As the main procession neared the group's position, they witnessed Nibenay’s Cultural Priestess, adorned with copper bracelets, sandals, and a light flowing skirt wrapped around her waist, standing bare-chested atop a wheeled platform pulled by slaves along the High Road. With pride, she proclaimed the Starlight Pageant as the celebration where Nibenay showered his favor upon his city and its subjects, asserting the omnipresence of Nibenay's watchful gaze and protection. Blue wisps of fog rose from the corners of buildings, coalescing into a long trail that swirled towards the templar and enveloped her body, streaming up into the sky before dissipating. Amidst the spectacle, the group overheard murmurs and snippets of conversation revealing rumors about the city's shadows having ears and sculptures with watching eyes, as well as tales of the templars' apparent helplessness when faced with a great beast that ravaged parts of the city. Some even whispered of a dragon's attack, adding to the mysterious aura surrounding Nibenay. Together, they absorbed the eerie atmosphere and pondered the enigmatic nature of the city and its secrets.
As the celebration continued, dancers performed acrobatic displays, wielding long spears and broadswords adorned with brightly colored cloth to depict traditional Nibenese warriors. Meanwhile, a group of prisoners dressed in grass skirts and grotesque wooden facemasks were shamelessly dragged down the street, harassed by the crowd. Their dance, known as wriquo-ih, commemorated martial life, with the wooden facemasks mocking those worn by Gulg warriors, indicating the prisoners' origin. These prisoners, hailing from Gulg, were slated to be killed during the pageant finale.
Overhearing conversations, the group caught snippets of discussions about the upcoming war between Urik and Tyr, and the potential involvement of Nibenay and Gulg. Concerns were voiced about the consequences of various alliances and actions: speculation about the repercussions if Gulg sided with Tyr, leading Nibenay to align with Urik and escalate the conflict; fear of widespread bloodshed across the tablelands if Nibenay and Gulg were drawn into the Tyrian-Urikite war; rumors about promises made by Urik regarding slaves to Nibenay; speculation about the origins and intentions of the Gulg prisoners, with some suggesting they were a scouting party sent to raid Nibenay’s supply roads; and discussion about Tyr's fledgling king's attempted dealings with Nibenay, and the likelihood of Nibenay aligning with Urik instead.
The great displays of magic continued to provide a sense of awe as the King’s servile illusionists rode along an enormous platform that floated across the high road. Templar overseers were stationed at every corner of the platform, proclaiming how their glorious King kept his subjects safe. The illusions depicted scenes of Nibenay battling great monstrosities of the desert, and with each strike, there was an enormous burst of magic that illuminated the entire sky and streets of Nibenay.
Those trained in Arcana or with knowledge of the Veiled Alliance theme immediately recognized that the illusions were actually powerful defiling magic, drawing power from the groves of trees along the city’s pathways. Among these groves, closely-guarded druids were escorted by the templars to tend to the trees and ensure they were not damaged by the defiling. Observers trained in Nature noted that the only trees able to survive this kind of abuse were trees of life, infused with primal power that defilers could freely draw upon.
While the crowd watched the fantastic displays of magic with awe, not everyone was enthused. A group of figures in the crowd couldn't hide their disdain for the defilers, their disapproval evident amidst the spectacle.
As the group approached, a weather-beaten man emerged from the crowd, stepping forward to inquire about their purpose in Nibenay, referring to it as the city where truth went to die. The man demonstrated knowledge of traditional secret hand signs and gestures used by the Veiled Alliance, revealing himself as a member of the Nibenese Alliance. Upon learning of their quest to find the druids of Yaramuke, he listened intently, carefully weighing their words. Eventually, he seemed to agree that their need was sufficient for him to risk trusting them.
"If what you say is true, then we should not waste any time. I have friends that will be able to help you," he declared. With that, he left the crowd and began walking back through the streets, motioning for them to follow him. Evidently, the man was willing to assist them in their quest, indicating a potential ally in their search for the druids of Yaramuke.
As they navigated through a maze of dizzying corridors and alleyways, distancing themselves from the crowds watching the Pageant, the group followed the weather-beaten man until he stopped and engaged in a brief discussion with another man nearby. After their exchange, the weather-beaten man turned to them and outlined a proposition: in exchange for their assistance, they would need the group to investigate the whereabouts of a missing templar named Jhehanee, who had escorted a group of slaves towards the Dragon’s Bowl and had not returned.
Upon hearing this, the group revealed that Jhehanee had been killed at the Dragon's Bowl, providing the information they sought. Convinced of their trustworthiness, the weather-beaten man, now identified as Polan Felk, the primary contact for the Veiled Alliance in Nibenay, agreed to collaborate with their Veiled Alliance chapter. In return for the shared information, Polan Felk disclosed a matter of great interest: Prince Dhojakt, rarely seen outside the palace, was planning to meet with an envoy from Urik. It was believed that this meeting was related to the recent Dragon’s Levy and the impending war with Tyr. In order to prevent Nibenay from allying with Urik against Tyr, the group needed to discover the location and purpose of this meeting.
Returning to the Starlight Pageant, the group notices a well-dressed noble eavesdropping on conversations regarding the impending war. They approach him, but before they can speak, he turns to meet their gaze, clearly expecting them. With the authority of a noble, he informs them that they have been under observation since their arrival in Nibenay and insists they accompany him to ensure Nibenay stays out of the war between Urik and Tyr.
Leading them through the streets and alleyways, far from the bustle of the pageant, the noble takes them to a sculptor’s studio, revealing it to be a gathering place for several women who appear to be templars. Closing the door behind them, the man reveals that an important negotiation is imminent within Nibenay, wherein Urik will request an alliance against Tyr, offering slaves in return. Prince Dhojakt, a despised figure who rarely leaves the palace, is expected to accept on behalf of Nibenay. The noble and his cohorts seek the group's help to preempt Prince Dhojakt's meeting and thwart the alliance.
They learn from the group that the noble is named Teshkan and his cohorts are templars known as Shadow Brides, allied with Siemhouk, a templar feared for her psionic powers. Siemhouk and Prince Dhojakt often oppose each other, vying for the Sorcerer-King's favor. However, Siemhouk and her faction wish to avoid involvement in Urik's war against Tyr, as they are currently at war with Gulg and do not want to face enemies on two fronts. Urik has offered a large group of slaves in exchange for Nibenay's alliance, with the meeting likely to take place in the slave emporium. Prince Dhojakt plans to meet with the Urik envoy shortly. Additionally, the faction is making arrangements with Korsk, a leader of Salt View, who is willing to satisfy the Dragon’s Levy with refugees from his settlement, which are Tyrians who fled after Kalak’s death. Armed with this information, the group is urged to act swiftly to prevent the alliance and secure Nibenay's neutrality in the impending conflict.
In the Hill District, the remnants of an ancient and sprawling palace dominate the landscape, serving as the living quarters for Nibenay's lower class. These ruins oscillate between states of emptiness and bustling activity, serving as a hub for trade and commerce. As the travelers navigate through this area, they traverse a path that winds through a series of tents, forming a vibrant trade center for the Sky Singer elven tribe.
Within the bustling elven market, merchants aggressively tout their goods, attempting to lure potential customers into making purchases. Amidst the hustle and bustle, the travelers encounter a group of rough-looking elves blocking their path. The tallest among them, clad in tight leathers matching the hue of his hair, politely demands a toll of 5 silver per person for passage through the Hill District.
Zyel, utilizing her insight, discerns that only one of the three elves is genuinely seeking conflict. Fazanna, being of elven descent herself, along with her companion Morhen, successfully negotiates with the elves to lower the toll. Shank, attempting to assert dominance, puffs out his chest but only elicits chuckles from the elves. However, his brother Shiv steps forward, bolstering Shank's bravado with his muscular presence, ultimately compelling the elves to relent and disappear into the bustling market crowd.
Leaving the Hill District behind, the travelers pass beneath the imposing High Road, a wide stone causeway elevated about 15 feet above the ground, reserved exclusively for the sorcerer-king and his army's use. Venturing under this grand structure, they enter the Reservoir District, home to the Exalted Path Monastery, where monks clad in bright orange robes wander in constant prayer, embodying principles of austerity, physical readiness, and psionic enlightenment. Observing Nibenese children undergoing monk training, the travelers witness the mingling of various races and classes as they endure trials within the monastery's confines.
As they navigate the district's narrow streets, the travelers are suddenly engulfed by a rush of monks and students, drawn out by the deep ringing of a bell. The influx of people creates a dense crowd, obstructing the travelers' path and making progress nearly impossible. Amidst the throng, monks offer blessings and words of encouragement as they maneuver through the crowd. Fazanna employs her acrobatic skills to deftly guide the party through the masses, while Morhen utilizes his knowledge of the monks' practices to instruct the group on when and how to move. Meanwhile, Hamra, tapping into his fire cleric abilities, attempts to intimidate the monks to create space, inadvertently sparking anger among some of them.
Leaving the Reservoir District behind, the travelers proceed north and west into the Western District of Nibenay. Along the way, they pass by shrines dedicated to the four elements - earth, air, fire, and water. In this rough and seedy part of Nibenay, the presence of templars is scarce, and those that are seen patrol the area only in large groups.
As they venture further into the district, the travelers are met with a scene of devastation. Evidence of massive destruction is visible, with numerous buildings razed to the ground, creating a vast area of devastation. The once claustrophobic streets are now nearly impassable in many areas, presenting a challenge in finding a clear path through the district.
Amidst the wreckage, slaves are everywhere, laboring to clear rubble and debris from the area. Some crews are assisted by sophisticated engineering devices, which efficiently lift and move large pieces of rubble. The travelers notice the arcane taint of powerful defiling magic pervading the district, indicating the aftermath of a devastating attack, possibly by the Dragon. The loss of life is evident, with victims seemingly drained of their life-force.
Despite their efforts to navigate through the obstacles, the travelers encounter setbacks. Zyel attempts to use her acrobatic skills to overcome the obstacles but inadvertently causes the group to stumble and backtrack multiple times. Hamra tries to recall the history of the district to find a way through but encounters numerous roadblocks along the journey, ultimately delaying their arrival at the emporium.
The slave emporium sprawls across a vast area, marked by clusters of buildings featuring prison bars, confinement areas, and holding pens. Despite the early hour, Nibenese citizens can be seen perusing the slaves and engaging in debates over their worth. At the far end, a group of guards bearing the lion insignia of Urik catch the group's attention. Accompanied by an older human clad in a golden cape, they guard the large padlocked double doors leading to a wooden slave compound. Through the bars, the group observes numerous slaves scattered across the straw-covered floor, illuminated by flickering torches left burning from the previous night.
As the group approaches, the Urikite templar and his slavers detect their presence and react swiftly. With a roar of challenge, they draw their weapons, initiating a quick but intense battle. The slavers and the Urikite templar prove to be formidable opponents, presenting a greater challenge than anticipated. Despite focusing their efforts on defeating these deadly adversaries, the group sustains grievous wounds, their initial objective of freeing the slaves temporarily overshadowed by the urgent need to survive the encounter.
A monstrous figure bursts into the emporium, a grotesque amalgamation of man and beast that defies description. With a lower half resembling that of a cilops, its segmented flat body is supported by hooked claws at the ends of twelve slender legs. From the knees up, it bears a remotely human torso, draped in a silk sarami and adorned with a black skullcap covering a shaved head. Tiny ears protrude from the base of its jaw, bulbous eyes akin to those of a cilops stare out, and a cavernous muzzle flares with every breath, revealing mandibles in place of teeth as it screams in rage at the sight of the battle unfolding.
Prince Dhojakt proves to be an overwhelming adversary for the group, trampling them under his insectoid feet, unleashing eldritch blasts, and striking with his poisonous mandibles. In the chaos, the group scatters to provide more elusive targets. Feeling useless, Zyel flees, while Morhen manages to persuade some slaves to seek freedom before also making his escape. The remaining heroes fight desperately for survival, teetering on the brink of defeat. Through cajoling and intimidation, they rally enough slaves to flee, with Shank releasing a cloud of volcanic ash before succumbing to Dhojakt's onslaught. However, Fazanna and Hamra manage to drag Shank away while Shiv is saved from harm and flies away to safety.
Despite the close call and the group's near-defeat, they ultimately succeed in their goal, thwarting the Urik-Nibenese alliance and ensuring the slaves' escape to freedom. Though they may not have vanquished the mighty Prince Dhojakt, their heroic efforts have achieved their primary objective, marking a hard-won victory against overwhelming odds.
Exiting the slave market, the group quickly maneuvers through the Western District, avoiding an increasing number of soldiers and templars patrolling the streets. Under the High Road, they encounter a contingent of Nibenese soldiers approaching from the east, prompting a woman to step out of a doorway and direct them southward while unleashing a spell of lightning to cover their retreat from the soldiers.
Continuing their frantic escape through the City-State, members of the Nibenese Veiled Alliance aid their flight. They find themselves near a market operated by merchant House Shom, where they come face to face with their adversary, Dhojakt, accompanied by templars and guards bearing the emblem of House Shom. As concealed members of the Veiled Alliance emerge to confront Dhojakt and his guards, a barrage of magic erupts from all sides in a chaotic battle.
Amidst the chaos, Dhojakt appears intent on pursuing the group but is suddenly distracted by the scent of someone named Sadira. He rushes towards a nearby half-elf with amber hair, catching her and inflicting pain before she manages to escape by invoking arcane words and transforming him into a shadowy form. Enraged, Dhojakt curses Sadira for defiling his father’s groves and attempts to retaliate, but she counters by inserting something into his nostril, causing him to writhe in agony.
As Sadira escapes, the guards are momentarily distracted, attending to Dhojakt's condition, allowing the group to continue their flight from the scene.
