Session 44
Tyrian Conspiracy 3
Tyrian Conspiracy 3
Upon returning to Tyr, the city felt different, with an unsettling atmosphere lingering in the air. As the group passed through the gates, they were informed that several senators had been assassinated. The city guard seemed perplexed and lacked any leads. There had been six murder attempts resulting in three fatalities. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a mysterious woman fleeing from the residence of the deceased Senior Templar Gennet.
Magnamus and his companions were summoned to a public emergency meeting in the Council Chambers where they learned of the murder of Senior Templar Gennet in the Bureau of Finance the previous night. The Templars accused the merchants of being responsible, citing recent tax reforms as a motive for the merchants' anger. Master Sintha of House Valex countered, accusing the Templars of internal scheming. The tension escalated when it was revealed that Rowen the Tailor, a Council representative from the Caravan Way, was also found dead that morning.
Chaos ensued as accusations flew between the Templars, merchants, and other factions present. Someone suggested that the Preservers might be responsible since they were the only faction whose prominent members were not targeted. Rikus refuted the claim, leading to a chaotic forum of accusations and arguments.
Senator Vildeen Tyrthani eventually managed to silence the parties, but Senator Turax's accusation regarding the attempted murder on Senator Trevalis Minthur sparked another outburst from the crowd. Amidst the commotion, Thaxos Vordon, the aging patriarch of House Vordon, rose to address the assembly.
Thaxos expressed concern about the city's safety and condemned the recent bloodshed and attacks. He vowed not to let Tyr fall victim to assassins and declared his intention to put an end to the murders and criminal threats in the Warrens. Despite objections from Captain Zalcor, Thaxos offered the resources of House Vordon to aid in the investigation.
Senior Templar Timor, after consulting with others, declined Thaxos's offer, expressing faith in the city guard and ongoing investigations. However, the crowd expressed dissatisfaction, suggesting that accepting aid from House Vordon could expedite the resolution of the matter. Thaxos, emboldened by the people's support, declared his intention to address the threats within the city, allowing the Council to focus on external enemies.
Thaxos's speech received a standing ovation from the crowd, much to the dismay of Sadira, Timor, and Rikus, who were dissatisfied with the public's reaction. Despite their reservations, Thaxos enjoyed the applause and support of the people.
As the group made their way to Captain Zalcor, Talara appeared in the crowd, wearing a hooded cloak. Spotting the group, she beckoned them to follow her. Talara led them out of the Council Chambers and to The Sandstone Inn in the Noble district.
Talara expressed her concern, stating that Thaxos had effectively gained public support for moving his troops into the city, rendering the Council powerless. She then asked the group to share what they had discovered during their trip to Altaruk.
After hearing their story, Talara appeared increasingly worried. Upon finishing, she bit her lip and raised an eyebrow, stating that their information confirmed her suspicions. She deduced that the mercenaries Nadar had brought back were the assassins responsible for the recent attempts, three of which had succeeded. Talara also speculated that the mountain camp they encountered served as a training ground for Thaxos's elite agents, recruited from the ranks of his dummy merchant houses. She suspected that this revelation was only the beginning and asked for their thoughts on the matter.
Even though they were the only patrons present at the Sandstone Inn, Talara motioned for the group to lean forward as she whispered. She explained the difficulty of accusing Thaxos of planning a coup without evidence, mentioning her missing informant from the Vordon manor, likely disposed of by Thaxos after discovering her allegiance. Talara revealed that the informant's last report hinted at frequent visits to Thaxos' office by the head of House Troika, suspected to be one of Thaxos' latest dummy houses.
Talara paused, emphasizing the importance of finding evidence of Thaxos' activities at House Troika's headquarters to expose him to the Council. She stressed the urgency of the situation, noting the potential for a coup with Thaxos consolidating power. Talara admitted she couldn't offer more money due to her frozen assets but promised substantial rewards if Thaxos was found guilty of conspiracy against the Council. Despite his popularity among the citizens, Talara mentioned Council members eager to see him face consequences, whether imprisonment or execution.
The group decided to infiltrate House Troika stealthily at night. They searched the market for an antidote to golden scorpion poison but found none. Returning to the inn to rest, they then proceeded past the lazy city guards to the heavily guarded Troika compound. Magnamus used a psionic anchor for a quick retreat if needed, and Mario cast gaseous form on him while he wore an invisibility ring.
Inside the windowless building, Magnamus located the main office and relevant documents in a locked drawer. Unable to interact in his current form, he waited for Mario's spell to expire before using his mental abilities to retrieve the contents unnoticed by the guards. Upon returning to the group, they examined the find—a logbook of recruits and a map indicating two assassin targets: Talara and Captain Zalcor.
Racing stealthily across the city, the group successfully ambushed three assassins approaching Talara's residence. With careful planning, they caught the assassins off guard: Borras, a male dwarf psion adorned with intricate tattoos; Sa'Mar, a male mul gladiator bearing the mark of his criminal past; and Yaris, a female human rogue with an exotic appearance.
During the confrontation, Magnamus utilized his mental abilities to temporarily impair Yaris's long sight, while Mario employed druidic magic to swiftly heal T'Taka, who had been struck by an assassin arrow. Despite these challenges, the group managed to dispatch the assassins efficiently.
After conversing with Talara, the group hurried to Captain Zalcor's location, disregarding stealth. They arrived just in time to encounter three more assassins: Redblade, a male half-elf psion with a red psionic blade; Mutami, a male half-elf fighter/rogue with facial tattoos depicting a drake; and Crakos, a male human wizard with an acid-scarred face.
The battle proved more challenging this time, with the psion unleashing A mental fireball and Crakos conjuring tendrils of inky black darkness. Despite the fierce opposition, the group fought valiantly, pushing themselves to their limits. Ultimately, they emerged victorious, although the outcome of the battle had been uncertain at times.
The bodies of the assassins, along with the map and agent lists, constituted the evidence required to have Thaxos judged and convicted in the courts of Tyr. Captain Zalcor and Talara planned to wake up and summon Timor, Sadira, and Rikus to the Council chambers immediately to seek approval for Thaxos's arrest.
However, both the heroes and the city guard were too late. The guards of House Troika discovered the break-in shortly after the group left the headquarters. Asher Troika was summoned immediately and rode out to the Vordon estate upon learning that the logbook and maps were missing.
In Tyr, the city guard discovered that Thaxos had managed to escape, and it would take time to organize a pursuit. Talara urgently requested one last favor from the group: to bring back Thaxos alive so she could ensure his conviction and death in the courts of Tyr. Promising a rich reward for success, Captain Zalcor assured the group they would be hailed as heroes upon their return and properly rewarded by the city.
Captain Zalcor emphasized the importance of bringing Thaxos back alive to expose his true motives and ensure he faced justice in the courts. He warned against Thaxos's potential retaliation in the future due to his resources. Encouraging them with the promise of rewards and prepared mounts at the stables by the gates, Captain Zalcor bid them good luck on their mission.
With urgency propelling them forward, the group wasted no time and set off immediately, their determination palpable as they followed the faint tracks left in the shifting sands. Each step brought them closer to their quarry, yet uncertainty lingered in the air, mingling with the desert heat.
As they approached Fort Amber, a sense of caution swept over them. Aware that the fortified outpost was under the control of House Vordon, they wisely chose to steer clear, mindful of the potential ambush that awaited within its walls. Their decision to bypass the fort spoke volumes of their strategic acumen and keen survival instincts.
Pressing onward, the vast expanse of the desert stretched out before them, the relentless sun beating down upon their backs. With each passing mile, the realization dawned upon them that catching up to Thaxos's party would be no easy feat. The trail seemed to stretch endlessly into the horizon, teasing them with its elusive nature.
As dusk descended upon the desert landscape, the group made the prudent decision to halt their pursuit and take a well-deserved rest near Fort Skonz. Nestled amidst the dunes, they sought refuge from the harsh elements, taking the opportunity to replenish themselves and their mounts.
Gathering around a flickering campfire, Mario skillfully whipped up a feast of tasty snacks, infusing the air with savory aromas that teased their senses. The crackling flames provided a comforting warmth as they savored the much-needed respite, their weary bodies finding solace in the camaraderie of their companions.
As they traversed the sandy expanse, the group stumbled upon a grisly sight amidst the dunes: the decaying carcass of a dune reaper, its massive form shrouded in a swarm of desert bugs feasting upon its remains. The stench of decay hung heavy in the air, assaulting their senses with its foul odor.
Nearby, a kes'trekel, a sleek desert predator, took flight at the group's approach, its agile form disappearing into the vastness of the desert landscape. Its sudden departure hinted at the presence of potential danger, adding an ominous tone to the already tense atmosphere.
Upon closer examination of the dune reaper's corpse, they observed deep gashes and lacerations that crisscrossed its thick hide. These wounds bore the unmistakable mark of bladed weapons, indicating that the creature had met its demise at the hands of skilled assailants. The sight of the mutilated carcass served as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking within the desert sands, further heightening their vigilance as they pressed on with their journey.
As the group ascended a dune, the scene unfolded before them: the Vordon party surrounded by a formidable pack of thri-kreen, their large, insectoid forms looming ominously in the desert landscape. Despite the tense atmosphere, no immediate conflict ensued. Their attention was drawn to Thaxos Vordon engaged in conversation with one of the mantis warriors, who was examining a gleaming gem with apparent interest.
Overhearing snippets of broken common from the kreen leader, they caught the phrase "Nice shiny," indicating its appreciation for the gem. The sentiment seemed to resonate with the other thri-kreen, who responded with approving clicks of their mandibles. Before they could fully process the scene, Nadar, a member of their group, pointed and shouted, drawing attention to their presence.
"Thaxos commands," he declared, his voice ringing out with authority. In response, the kreen leader issued a command in their native tongue, prompting a sudden shift in focus as all eyes turned towards the group. With alarming speed, the thri-kreen surged forward, brandishing gythkas and preparing to unleash their deadly chatkchas.
The group steeled themselves for the impending clash, recognizing the dire peril of facing a pack of thri-kreen raiders, their ferocity matched only by their cunning tactics and lethal weaponry.
Wave after wave of thri-kreen rushed in from all directions. Mario summoned erdlu to create a ring of defenses around the group. Hamur struck out with his psionic echo, felling many foes. T'Taka chucked his chatka at his fellow bug-kin. Tectilith struck out with his mind, often failing but occasionally succeeding. Magnamus delved deep into his powers, blasting groups of thri-kreen at a time. The Thri-Kreen retaliated with their racial weapons of chatka and gythka. The group found themselves outnumbered and surrounded. The kreen attacked in wave after wave, and they didn’t know how much longer they could bear to fight.
In the heat of battle, they suddenly noticed several shadows appearing along the border horizon of the surrounding dunes. By Ral, it was an elven war party!
“Inferior bugs!” shouted the elven leader. “You will perish and your carapaces rot in the sun-scorched sands.” The kreen shifted their attention from the group to the new threat and tastier enemy. The kreen leader clicked his mandibles as he announced Gyth-tik! (“Blood hunt!”), and the thri-kreen charged towards the elves on top of the dunes in great leaps.
The elven leader replied in elven: E'Komtii Matota! Maakotii Matota! (“Death to our enemies! Death to the ones who have wronged us!”). The elves let loose a volley of arrows.
For a moment, the group was forgotten, but not for long. The agents from House Vordon drew their weapons.
