Session 43
Tyrian Conspiracy 2
Tyrian Conspiracy 2
The group, determined to catch up with the caravan, hurried to another gate to exit the city of Urik. Along the way, they paused to rent some erdlus, hoping to compensate for the lost time. Riding hard throughout the rest of the day and into the night, they pressed on through the following day. However, as the relentless pursuit continued, they eventually lost track of the caravan and made the decision to rest.
Hamur's erdlu and T'Taka were visibly exhausted, prompting the group to leave the erdlu behind for their well-being. Seeking a reprieve, they discovered a sheltered rock outcropping to rest beneath. As night fell, the tranquility shattered when a group of four savage muls launched a wild ambush from a rise. Engaging in a fierce battle, the group managed to eliminate one of the attackers and drive the remaining three away. Yet, the victory came at a significant cost, leaving them to tend to their wounds and assess the toll of the unexpected confrontation in the desolate wilderness.
After an arduous journey, the group finally caught up to the caravan, only to be met with a scene of chaos and devastation. The caravan had fallen victim to a raid, leaving a grim tableau of death in its wake. Lifeless guards sprawled across the area, arrows littering the scene. Among the casualties, Daimon's body bore signs of mutilation, a grim testament to the brutality of the attack. Amidst the carnage, the sole survivor was Cleaz, his face marred and burned beyond recognition.
Cleaz, the bearer of grim tidings, conveyed that Nadar had been taken hostage during the raid, a consequence of the poor defense arrangement orchestrated by him. Determined to uncover the truth and rescue Nadar, the group decided to pursue the trail left by the attackers. The path led them to a point where it diverged, revealing a split in the group's direction. Notably, one had deviated from the main group, heading back in the direction of Tyr.
Opting to follow this unexpected branch, the group pushed forward, T'Taka growing increasingly exhausted with each step. The relentless pursuit led them back to Tyr, a bitter return to the city that bore witness to the unraveling of their plans and the ominous trail left by the raiders.
After a night of rest at an inn, the group made their way to The Wayward Trader the following day. Nestled in the Artisan’s District, the tavern exuded a quiet charm, offering a selection of ales, broy, kip sausage, and biscuits. As they entered, sidelong glances from some patrons greeted them. Seated at a nearby table, a character in a hooded robe gestured for them to approach. As the hood fell back, the familiar face of the woman who had initially hired their services came into view.
"Ah, you're back. I heard the caravan had an accident. Please, be seated. Try the Tyrian ale; it is among the finer," she warmly welcomed. The barkeep was summoned, and a round of ales was ordered. Each mug was filled with the famed ale, and the mysterious employer tipped the barkeep with a silver coin, adding a wink with one eye. With a casual demeanor, she urged them to share all the details of what had transpired.
As the group recounted their experiences, a shadow flickered in the corner of their eyes, briefly obscuring the outside light. In the next moment, Mario was struck by an unseen assailant. A sharp pain radiated through his arm, which soon went numb. An obsidian knife, coated with a yellow substance, revealed the insidious nature of the attack—poison! They searched for the assailant but found only an open window.
Rising to her feet, their employer whispered, "Meet me at the Golden Inix, midway along Caravan Way at high sun tomorrow. It is safer there." With that, she gracefully moved toward a curtain-covered doorway at the back of the locale. The group now faced a critical decision, surrounded by the watchful eyes of everyone in the tavern.
Exiting the inn, the group sought a nearby place to rest and strategize for their next move. Suddenly, a cry of pain pierced the air as Hamur shouted out. Confused and unable to pinpoint the source of his discomfort, T'Taka suggested removing his backpack. To their shock, three golden scorpions were discovered, surreptitiously placed there without his knowledge. The insidious creatures had injected their venom, sapping the strength of both Mario and Hamur.
With urgency, the group pressed on until they found a safe inn to recuperate. Mario and Hamur, weakened by the venom, were in dire need of rest and recovery. Tectilith, taking the responsibility of watch, remained vigilant throughout the night while the others rested. During his watch, he noticed three more scorpions stealthily entering through their window. Swift and decisive, Tectilith unleashed his psionic abilities, blasting all three scorpions before they could pose any further threat. The night, fraught with danger, eventually gave way to a semblance of security within the confines of the inn.
Midway along Caravan Way, where the road took a bend, a narrow alley opened on the left. Next to it, a long brick building, nearly as narrow as the alley, emitted tempting aromas of frying inix and sweet broy. A cracked sign overhead featured a golden inix on its left side opposite a stylized bottle, proudly announcing the establishment as a tavern.
To the right of the door stood a half-giant doorman, wielding a massive stone morning star. Tables with seating for 2-4 people each occupied the left side of a walkway extending along the length of the building, leading to a stairway going up. On the right side of the stairway was a small, L-shaped counter, behind which sat a middle-aged, dark-haired half-elven woman. A curtained doorway in the wall behind the counter occasionally parted as serving girls delivered food and drinks to the patrons seated at the tables.
Inside the tavern, Talara Vordon addressed the group, expressing regret for the trouble caused by affiliating with them. She extended a formal greeting to each of them, introducing herself as Talara Vordon. She then conveyed her gratitude for their assistance and proposed a reward of 120 silvers, emphasizing the importance of their collaboration.
Talara shared information about Nadar's departure for Altaruk, suspecting hidden motives behind his official mission to renegotiate a kank nectar contract with the merchant houses of Balic. She stressed the need for discretion, emphasizing that Nadar must remain unaware of being followed. Talara arranged for kanks to be reserved at the stables and urged the group to avoid unnecessary confrontation.
As parting instructions, Talara directed them to visit The Sandstone Inn in the Noble District upon their return to Tyr, mentioning that they should inform the innkeeper that "the Lady" had sent them. With a nod, Talara stood up and headed for the door, leaving the group to contemplate their next move.
After reaching a decision, the group opted to take a brief respite at the inn before embarking on their pursuit of Nadar at the gate. However, as they exited the establishment, a sudden attack unfolded. A halfling assassin emerged from an alleyway, revealing a trap he had set with caltrops. The assassin skillfully utilized thrown, poison-tipped daggers and seemingly defied gravity, magically walking along the wall to avoid the hazardous caltrops he had strategically placed.
In response to the surprise attack, Mario gave chase, attempting to catch the nimble assassin. However, despite his efforts, Mario's attack missed its mark. The assassin retaliated by hurling three more daggers, with two finding their intended targets. Once again, the agile assailant scaled the walls and swiftly vanished from the backside of the alley, eluding capture.
Undeterred, Mario chose to collect some of the dropped caltrops before the group gathered their kanks and made their way towards the gate, preparing to exit the city in pursuit of their elusive prey.
As the group approached the city gate, a templar stepped forward and declared, "Halt. Animal inspection." The templar deliberately positioned himself to obstruct their passage, singling them out for scrutiny. While no one else underwent such inspection, the templar meticulously examined their mounts, recording details on a clay tablet for each.
"Planning on taking these kanks outside the city, huh? I don’t think so," the templar remarked. He pointed to distinctive ring patterns on one kank's antennae, claiming it to be a rare specimen with a strong sense of direction, and another kank supposedly infected with contagious parasites. According to the templar, regulations mandated them to take the infested kank to a licensed slaughterhouse in the Warrens.
Doubtful of the templar's claims, Mario personally checked the animals and discovered that the templar was lying. Confronting the templar with the truth, Mario's insistence earned him the templar's ire, and he was slapped with a 20 ceramic fine, which he reluctantly paid. Seeking an expedited resolution, the group attempted to bribe their way past the templar.
"I suppose we can make a temporary exception. As long as you guarantee your return, we can accept a deposit – nonrefundable, of course," the templar suggested, and with a swift exchange, they secured passage and promptly departed.
After reaching Fort Skonz, the group decided to take a well-needed rest for the night, planning to continue their chase in the morning. The next day, as they traversed the road to Altaruk, their keen eyes spotted something lying on the side of the well-trodden desert path. Upon closer inspection, they discovered an unconscious elf, still breathing but severely dehydrated from prolonged exposure to the sun.
Realizing the elf's dire condition, they provided him with water, and the unconscious figure gradually stirred. The elf, identified as Dukkoti Breezechaser, expressed gratitude for their assistance. To their surprise, Dukkoti recognized Nadar, revealing that he was one of those who took part in the raid.
Dukkoti explained that he had been fleeing a relentless pack of thri-kreen for days. Grateful for the respite, the elf stayed with the group throughout the day, departing only after nightfall. Tectilith, showing kindness, provided him with some rations for his continued journey.
Discovering a path leading into the mountains from the main road, the group hesitated on whether to follow it when their attention was seized by the sight of two menacing giants approaching with hostile intent. The giants, driven by malice, began hurling massive boulders at the group while steadily closing the distance.
In a quick and strategic response, Mario conjured a fog cloud, shrouding their escape. Seizing the opportunity, the group swiftly ran away, attempting to put a safe distance between them and the giants. However, T'Taka, worn out and unable to run on foot, faced a dire situation. Thinking on his feet, Mario cast gaseous form on T'Taka and ingeniously stowed him away in an emptied waterskin before fleeing on his ride.
The chase was arduous and protracted, with the giants persistently pursuing the group. Despite the giants' relentless efforts, the group managed to outmaneuver them, eventually forcing the giants to abandon their pursuit.
Infiltrating past a pair of House Vordon Guards who were vigilant over crodlu, the group stealthily followed the trail of Nadar's party. Their journey led them to the brink of a cliff, offering a panoramic view of a canyon below. The canyon was abuzz with activity, as men and women of diverse races engaged in rigorous training, reminiscent of gladiatorial schools.
As they observed, Nadar was warmly received by a robust, bald man with dark skin. The two disappeared into one of the tents, while Cratek stood watch outside. Emerging from the tent after some time, Nadar and his companion summoned the entire camp to attention. The assembled group formed disciplined ranks, their silence falling instantly upon command.
The man accompanying Nadar addressed the crowd, announcing that the time was drawing near. Lord Thaxos was in the final stages of preparation, and Nadar had been dispatched to gather a select group for a crucial mission. The speaker, evidently in a position of authority, personally chose five men and one woman to accompany Nadar, while the rest were instructed to remain in the camp for continued training. Promises of rewards awaited the dedicated efforts of all when the appointed time arrived.
As the group began contemplating their next move, they suddenly found themselves ambushed by a pack of hairy, beast-like men. Armed with clubs and possessing a vicious bite, these assailants engaged the group in a fierce battle. Meanwhile, members of the camp, alerted by the tumult, unleashed a barrage of arrows upon the embroiled combatants.
The confrontation proved brutal, with each strike on the hairy assailants triggering their psionic biofeedback ability, inflicting equal damage on those around them. Despite a couple of casualties within the group, they managed to narrowly escape with their lives just before the camp reinforcements could surround them. The skirmish had taken a toll, but the group survived the ordeal.
