Session 124
Stopping Dregoth
Stopping Dregoth
The party stood poised on the outer stair of the Pristine Tower, their path sealed by Dregoth’s shimmering, deadly prismatic wall. Shank, driven by fury, seized his brother’s weapon—Bonecrusher—and charged headlong into the blinding radiance. His blows clanged uselessly against the barrier as the wall’s brilliance robbed him of sight.
Karnos pushed forward despite the glare, raising the Star of Badna. When he pressed the ancient artifact against the barrier, the wall’s red layer dissolved in a brilliant flash, revealing a pulsing orange glow beneath. Behind him, Anvar lifted a wand and hurled haste into Zahraan, quickening the warrior for the assault to come.
But before they could act, the heavens themselves seemed to split—a meteor swarm crashed down, shaking the tower and scattering the group. Reeling, Karnos forced the Star of Badna against the wall again, burning away the orange layer to expose a crackling yellow shield. Zahraan, waiting for this exact moment, surged forward despite his blindness. His strike of pure force shattered the yellow veil, unveiling a poisonous green radiance.
Safi responded instantly—his dimensional shift carved a portal through the green layer, erasing it from the barrier. The blue layer flared into view. Shank, roaring in frustration, ignited his pyroclastic technique; Bonecrusher became a hammer of living flame. His fiery strike smashed through the blue shield, leaving only the indigo layer quivering before them.
A wave of mental pressure crashed over the group, cold and invasive. They braced themselves, resisting the unseen force clawing at their thoughts—yet Fazanna faltered. Her will buckled, and she turned, spell-focused eyes clouded, drawing her blades.
Karnos, steady under pressure, raised the Star once more and burned away the indigo shroud, leaving only violet between them and their goal. Anvar attempted to unravel it with dispel magic, but the wand sputtered uselessly. Safi grabbed it, and Anvar strengthened him with the blessing of the tree. Shiv echoed the blessing over Zahraan, while Shank stood red-faced with fury, shouting at the unyielding wall.
Fazanna, now controlled, lunged at Karnos. Though he twisted away from some strikes, two blades found their mark before the party was hammered by another psychic assault that sent pain singing through their minds.
And then—Safi steadied his breath, lifted the wand, and unleashed one last dispelling surge. The violet layer shattered like glass under a hammer. The prismatic storm of color vanished, and the path into the Pristine Tower finally lay open before them.
The party ascended into the Steeple of Crystals of the Pristine Tower, entering a vast dome of gleaming white crystal. At its apex, seven enormous gemstones—ruby, amethyst, emerald, sapphire, opal, diamond, and aquamarine—glowed in a perfect circle above a steel collar, beams of light converging through the empty circlet. Below, the Undead Dragon King, Dregoth, towered over thirty feet tall, his presence commanding and terrifying, bathed in the scintillating light. From the shadows of the chamber, his haunting, mystical chanting echoed, chilling all who listened.
Zahraan surged forward with a Step of the Wind, striking at Dregoth with unarmed blows that bounced harmlessly off the dragon king’s undead form. Shiv, sensing danger, unleashed True Sight from his magical sword, revealing two hidden artifacts powering Dregoth’s spell: a colossal clay urn and a writhing living vortex. He dashed for the urn, straining against its immovable mass, while Shank, bolstered by Blessing of the Tree and a potion of super-heroism, raced toward the vortex, narrowly avoiding Dregoth’s tail strike.
Dregoth’s deathly breath swept across the chamber, incinerating Safi in a flash of necrotic fire. Fazanna bolstered Karnos with healing, and Safi, reforming, telekinetically assaulted the urn and dispelled its magic. Dregoth, visibly troubled, cast twin Fingers of Death at Shiv and Safi. Chaos engulfed the chamber: claws tore into Zahraan, multiple Fingers of Death struck, and the party struggled to heal and reposition.
Shank attacked the living vortex with Bonecrusher and his artifact pearl, both resisting his efforts. Shiv battered the urn with his rage, cracking it, though Dregoth’s spell remained formidable. When the urn finally shattered, a torrent of blood spilled forth, enraging the Undead Dragon King. Desperate, Shank attempted to drain Dregoth’s mind with the artifact pearl, but the dragon king’s power was overwhelming.
Seizing an opening, Shank healed Zahraan, who fled, followed swiftly by Anvar. Dregoth’s devastating breath swept the chamber again, obliterating Safi’s body. Shank rushed to retrieve Safi’s staff, only to be knocked prone by Dregoth’s wings. Karnos, using his psionic mystic nomad ability, pushed Fazanna toward the exit and pulled Shank along, narrowly escaping the tower with the furious Dregoth raging behind them.
The Steeple of Crystals fell silent once more, the shattered urn and scorched floor marking the violent clash, and the party emerged battered, barely clinging to life after facing the full fury of the Undead Dragon King with one of their friends gone.
