Introduction: In this class you will watch and make documentary films about many different topics.

The documentary genre will help:

Writing techniques for subtitling and narrating in English.
Speaking interview skills in English
Listening to technical and everyday topics in English
Reading information and research for making videos
English story telling skills
In this class you will learn camera angles and shooting techniques
Beginning and intermediate editing skills using Imovie.
Learn entry level professional subtitling techniques and rules from translating for: English to Japanese and Japanese to English.

Course Goals: In this class you will make 5 documentaries:

Autobiographical: video about you (Animoto)
Buildings: video about a favorite building or location (Animoto)
Food: short video made about food (Imovie)
Travel: mix of food places (Imovie)
People: videoing a local person (Imovie)

You will have the opportunity to submit finished videos to film festivals around the world.

Assessment:

In the ELI, we use the same grading system as most English-speaking countries.

Your grade at the end of the semester comes from categories. The categories have different weights. Your grade at the end of the semester will come from these numbers. The categories, weights, and descriptions are below:

Attendance:

If you are more than 20 minutes late to class, you are absent. Please come on time. If you are late several times, this will affect your attendance/participation grade.
If you are late or absent because of a train delay, be sure to get a note from the station (遅延証明書) and show it to me so I can excuse you.
If you miss class because you are sick, you must bring me a receipt from the doctor. I will then excuse your absence.
If you have more than 6 unexcused absences you automatically fail this course and have to repeat it again next year.
At KUIS, you will fail if you miss over 1/3 of the classes in a semester. This is different from your “Attendance/Participation” grade! If you miss too much class, I have to fail you. For this class, that means that if you miss more than 10 times, you will fail, even if your grades are good and even if your you have excuses for your absences! Be careful!

Participation:

Coming to class is not enough. You also need to be prepared and you need to participate. Here is a list of behaviours which will cause you to lower your Attendance/Participation mark:

Not doing your homework
Not participating in group or class activities
Sleeping
Speaking Japanese

What to Bring to Class (EVERY time!):

Video projects
All hand outs through the semester in a folder
Project Hard drives
camera and audio equpment
cords for camera and audio equipment

Late Work:

Assignments have specific due dates.
In some cases late work will be accepted but given a lower score. Please ask me when it is acceptable to turn in late assignments.
Please turn your work in on time.
