Took the long way to medical school. I was not a career changer, just someone that had a crushed dream at one point, but just could not give up on it. Started undergrad in Boston, MA, which is an amazing city, but had a little too much fun and my grades suffered. Transferred to UGA for a new start and got my act together, but just was not quite enough. Applied a few times to medical school, but never even got an interview. Eventually, went to Emory for my MPH and Tufts for my MBS.
Afterwards, I found myself at the American University of the Caribbean (AUC) on St. Maarten. Before I shipped off to the Caribbean, I had a few medical school applications still floating around for the upcoming cycle. Ended up with an interview to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Georgia Campus in Suwanee, GA. I still remember when I got the call for GA-PCOM. I was the vice president of the SGA at AUC and was helping set up for the white coat ceremony for students coming in to the summer class. One of the greatest days of my life.
During my fourth year of medical school, I still had no idea what I wanted to do. Initially, started thinking I wanted to do primary care, but found that I really enjoyed hospital medicine. I ended up applying to only a few programs and did not match my first cycle. I went to a transitional year program at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, NC. The following cycle I applied to a lot more programs and ended up matching to my 1st choice. Again, I still vividly remember exactly what I was doing when I got the "You Matched" email on Monday and when I opened the second email on Friday, newest greatest moment of my life.
Overall, I have been blessed to have a family that supported me through this journey, financially and emotionally, and I could never have done this without them. If you are as lucky as I am and do not want to give up on your dream, I hope that I can inspire you to continue following your dreams and one day acheive your goals.
