We are pleased to announce that during our launch event, there will be a presentation by Mr. Safdar Hussain on "IDSP's University of Community Development: Cost Effective, Environment-Friendly and Sustainable Educational Model".
Safdar Hussain is one of the core members of the Institute for Development Studies and Practices (IDSP), Pakistan. He is the thought leader behind the institute's human-centred, green climate regime. His dream is to invest in sustainable, pragmatic approaches rooted in indigenous knowledge of the local communities to inspire them to design cost-effective, environment-friendly and financially sustainable models for young people.
IDSP’s has sparked the curiosity of many searching for alternative development models within the local context. Based on indigenous wisdom, knowledge and economic activities, the model empowers the local people and engages local technology and materials.
The institute building is a glowing example of this model. The building is made of mud, a traditional substance found in abundance in the vicinity. This not only stimulates the local economy by using locally available materials and local human resources but also asserts their cultural and social uniqueness.
The model not only preserves the traditions but also is cost-effective. Mud buildings require fewer energy resources as they remain moderately cool in summer and warm in winter. The model uses solar panels, wind turbines and biogas plants to fulfil the energy requirements.
Balochistan is the land of fauna and flora, and the institute generates income by cultivating organic flowers and fruits. Rainwater is harvested to fulfil the domestic needs of the university in a province where water scarcity is a major challenge.
The model demonstrates self-reliance, self-sufficiency and traditional wisdom. This explicable model is an example for the youth and communities across Pakistan. It illustrates that a resource-rich country like Pakistan can progress and develop through indigenous knowledge and traditional wisdom. We, the people have the real power to change anything, so let that change be positive.

Housing plays an important role in human life and in our society. It has a great social and economic impact on our lives and the way we live. However, several countries are still facing challenges and problems, such as lack of policies, poor planning and design, improper facilities and services, unaffordability of housing, housing shortage, unavailability of low-cost housing etc.
Many of these housing issues and problems also need to be addressed in Pakistan.
