Ar. Maryam Jamil
Graduate Research Scholar at Bilkent University, Turkey
Born and brought up in Quetta city, I always wanted to set an example for the girls of Balochistan to get educated and build their careers. I started my journey of being an architect in 2013 when I started my bachelors in Architecture at BUITEMS Quetta.
I secured one of the most prestigious scholarships in Pakistan at the Undergraduate level, “Global UGRAD Cultural Exchange Program”. I went to the US on a fully-funded scholarship for one whole semester in 2017. I was placed in Kent State University, known for having one of the best Architecture schools. There, I co-authored a research paper with a professor. It gave me excellent exposure, which every architect needs to grow professionally in their career. I was awarded “Cultural Ambassador in the US” by the US Department of State.
After graduation, I did several government-level internships and worked with private firms for at least 1.5 years. But the research was always my passion from student times, and I always wanted to pursue masters. I finally got a fully funded scholarship in one of the top-ranked international universities located in Turkey. Currently, I am doing MSc. Architecture (Masters in research) from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. Besides, I am also a Research/Teaching Assistant in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Bilkent University.
After my Master, I am willing to continue my career in research and academia.
Ar. Abdul Samad Khan
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders),
Construction Project Manager at Uganda, East Africa.
I am Abdul Samad Khan, belongs to the beautiful mountainous area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa called Malakand. I graduated in 2015; when I look back to my spectacular university life in BUITEMS, over the past years, things we have learned at BUITEMS made me a skilled professional and prepared me to face unpredictable ways of my career.
An honest confession, after graduation from the BUITEMS, when I started my professional life, my head swings at 360° as it was a different world. But I didn’t lose hope, dedication and I focused on my career. I struggled to learn & push myself to achieve my professional goals in architecture.
I started my professional career with a competent architect firm in Peshawar with an excellent reputation in private practice and large-scale government sectors. After starting this career, I focused on structural designs, emphasizing modern health care structures equipped with the latest technological gears, coping with medical needs, and help improve the quality of care for our clients. Sketching is my passion, and systemically, I thoroughly search for the best possible outcomes of my project and different methods to create synergies.
My passionate dedication to architectural design and work brought me to a different level of the working environment. It offered me an opportunity to work for one of the world’s top medical organizations that provide medical services in different contexts and low-income countries. I joined a French based non-governmental Médecins Sans Frontiéres (MSF) in 2018 as construction manager. MSF is currently working in over 72 countries and with around 33000 medical staff. I worked on the design & construction of the BSL3 laboratory in Ukraine and other buildings. It is one of the country 1st and only laboratories equipped with high tech HVAC systems and contamination protection. I am currently working in East Africa as the construction project manager to design community health centres in remote areas.
We all must be aware of professional challenges that came across our path, but there are also opportunities for all of us. I will always be happy & ready to guide BUITEMS colleagues whenever it is needed.
The purpose of life is not only to be happy but also to be helpful, honourable, compassionate, and have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.
Thanks & appreciation to all the honourable teachers for their hard work and dedication to the Department of Architecture, BUITEMS.
