The Net-Zero Energy Coalition - National Capital Region is a peer-to-peer exchange of passionate practitioners dedicated to creating thriving, resilient, and equitable zero-carbon communities. The organizational structure is made up of a ten-person leadership team, six committees (each with two co-chairs), committee members, and general membership.
Coalition members are expected to actively participate in the Coalition. The level of participation will vary from person to person and can include developing project case studies, attending or speaking at events, and volunteering on committees.
Six unique committees address different aspects of the organization to facilitate the mission and vision. Each committee is led by two elected co-chairs, with one of the co-chairs serving as a liaison on the Leadership Team.
The Leadership Team embodies the values of the Coalition and actively works to promote its vision and mission. The leadership team consists of ten elected positions: two Co-coordinators, a Secretary, a committee liaison from each of the six committees, and a partnership liaison.
Our vision is a National Capital Region made up of thriving, resilient and just communities working hand-in-hand to reduce atmospheric carbon in the built environment as the pathway to achieve viability/sustainability for ourselves and for future generations.
Our mission is to drive the National Capital Region towards zero carbon communities. We organize our coalition of like-minded volunteers to work collaboratively and support each other in making immediate and meaningful progress towards this goal.
Bold - We incorporate cost effective passive design strategies in all designs starting now. We pitch NZE designs rather than waiting for the client to ask.
Beautiful - We take an expansive view including general visual aesthetics, comfort, and emotional connection to the spaces we design.
Supportive and Collaborative – We work together towards a common goal and recognize that this is hard work that must be done as a community. We understand that we all benefit from supporting each other.
Inclusive and Diverse - We seek the voice and participation of people of diverse backgrounds (race, color, religion, gender, age, disability, etc.) and income levels to accurately reflect the needs of our community. Regardless of a person’s circumstances, we provide the same access to creating and occupying Net Zero buildings.
Clear and Open - We openly share knowledge and lessons learned in order to advance our mission as quickly as possible. We share openly any breakthroughs, successes, failures, and lessons learned. We express ideas with clarity and coherence, in a compelling way.
Innovative and Incremental – We encourage new ideas and technologies that are needed to meet our NZE goals. We will not let perfection be the enemy of the good.
A net-zero energy building is defined as one that is highly energy-efficient and produces onsite, or procures offsite as necessary, carbon-free renewable energy in an amount sufficient to offset the annual energy use associated with operations.
