DIY Instructional Video
Learning outcomes
Craft an Effective Instructional Video: Participants will learn to define learning objectives, identify their target audience, and craft a clear script. Additionally, they will be able to choose the most appropriate video format (talking head, montage, animation) to best suit their instructional goals and audience engagement.
Acquire basic skills in DIY video production with free tools: This section will provide hands-on experience utilising free video recording and editing applications, including the exploration of generative AI applications for creating visuals. Participants will learn basic screen recording techniques using readily available tools like smartphones and how to edit their videos for clarity and impact.
Harness Video for Enhanced Lesson Delivery: The workshop will equip participants with strategies to deliver engaging and informative content on camera, while also exploring techniques for integrating their newly created instructional videos seamlessly into their existing lesson plans. This could involve practicing different presentation styles, incorporating questions for audience interaction, and utilising effective vocal delivery techniques.
Ponder on this fact...
People across the globe upload 48 hours of video to YouTube every minute, which translates to nearly eight years of content every day. And that's not taking into account any other video-uploading site. Mind-boggling!!
Now, imagine your students can listen to you speaking while they are on the bus, walking to the gym or doing their chores. If you have watched a video tutorial on YouTube or listened to an audio podcast on iTunes, then you should appreciate the value of these resources in education. All you need is a simple web-based application or an app—and of course, good internet connection!
Some teachers will shudder at the thought of preparing a video. "I'm not tech savvy". "I don't have time to prepare my course notes, let alone preparing a video". These remarks are quite common. Well, it's always easy to come out from our comfort zone but a little investment of time now will take us a long way in the future.
Now, watch this short video clip. Salman Khan of Khan Academy has made a big wave in the world of education with his teaching videos. Do you think in the future students can just learn EVERYTHING on their own without much assistance from teachers? Are teachers at risk of becoming irrelevant?
A short, well-crafted video can be a very powerful and effective way to deliver content. For example, watch this video, 'Increase Your Brain Power by Juggling 3 Balls (or More)!' by Zaid Ali Alsagoff.
Look at this example from my colleague, Dr Nik Hadiyan (USM).
This DIY video production, by Dr Ema Izati Zull is short and concise (4 min) and was recorded and edited entirely using a smartphone.
Another good example of a DIY video production with B-roll. It may look simple but I believe it takes hours of preparation. She looks very natural and appears to enjoying herself. That's the way! Nice one!
Your feedback is most appreciated!
