Research for Impact is one of the core strategic themes in SU`s Vision 2020. How does your research relate to that?

My research focuses on treating and preventing infectious diseases such as HIV and TB.


Please give us your impression of the role that research and innovation can play in the betterment of society?

Research and Innovation is essential and good for society`s moral if it the innovation is reported on and if tangible benefits are seen.


What would you regard as the most important aspects to consider to effectively support researchers?

Time, infrastructure support


What do you enjoy most about your job and what are the aspects that you find challenging?

I enjoy the creativity & camaraderie of colleagues .


What is the biggest piece of advice that you would give early-career researchers?

Be persistent & develop plans to cope with adversity (which is the rule rather than the exception).


The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the way we work. What, from your point of view, is the most pertinent change and how will this affect your work in the future?


This has been another major issue to deal with. The science is fascinating. This is the first time that infection prevention and mask wearing have received the prominence they need. A personal benefit is not traveling.


What do you do for fun (apart from research!)

Run with our dogs and climb Table Mountain with my wife, spend time with granddaughter, read.
