Prof Lesley Le Grange


Lesley Le Grange is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Curriculum Studies in the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He is a former chair of the Department of Curriculum Studies and Vice-Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University. Lesley teaches and researches in the fields of environmental education, research methodology, science education, and curriculum and assessment. He holds a BSc degree from UWC, BA, HDE(P/G)sec, BEd, MEd cum laude from UCT and a PhD from SU.

He has 193 publications and serves on editorial boards of eight peer-reviewed journals. Leading international journals that he has published in recent years include: Educational Philosophy and Theory, International Review of Education, Journal of Curriculum Studies, Journal of Moral Education. Lesley has contributed to several international handbooks on/in education, the most recent the Springer, International Handbook of Interpretation in Educational Research Methods (2015). He has delivered 145 academic presentations (53 as invited speaker), and is recipient of several academic awards and prizes.

He is a member of the Accreditation Committee of the Council on Higher Education in South Africa and Vice-President of the International Association of the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (IAACS). Lesley is Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (UK). In environmental education his current research interests are: critically ‘analyzing’ sustainability and its relationship to education; developing Ubuntu as an environmental ethic and exploring its implications for education. In curriculum studies his interest is in exploring the nexus of currere, ubuntu and post-humanist theory.

Distinguished professor Lesley le Grange’s innovative work in the field of curricula and teaching makes him instrumental in the University’s pursuit of excellence through ongoing curriculum renewal. His re-election as vice-president of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies in 2017 attests to his curriculum development expertise. He has received several awards, including eight Rector’s excellence awards, two Vice-Rector’s awards for research productivity and the Education Association of South Africa’s Young Researcher medal, Santam medal for research excellence as well as medal of honour.
