The assignment was to build a low cost bridge with specific parameters, and our bridge met those requirements. It also was under the tension and compression strength ratio maximums, so it was a success when it was load tested. The bridge took a while to build because after designing and testing, we mostly changed the size of the bars rather than the design of the bridge. The cost of the structure would be ~$60k cheaper if we didn't need to use the carbon steel tubes in our design. We found that the bars resisted loads better in both compression and tension than the hollow tubes, so we used the bare minimum on the project.
