Founded in 1834,

the East Tennessee Historical Society serves the citizens of the 35 counties of East Tennessee. The misson of the East Tennessee Historical society is to preserve, interpret, and promote the hsitory of Tennessee, focusing on East Tennessee, to educate and connect the region, its people, history, culture, and heritage. 

 

Teach TN History

ETHS's Teach TN History website provides curriculum content, Padlets and lesson plans from previous teacher workshops, a Teacher Text, and artifact lesson plans to assist teachers tackling various elements of Tennessee history. This resource-rich website is available to all teachers and is the best way to hear about upcoming teacher workshops and summer seminars. 

 

Teacher Professional Development

ETHS offers a variety of teacher professional development, both independently and in partnership with DTH and with school districts. 

Our signature professional development opportunity is our Teach Tennessee History Summer Institute in partnership with Humanities Tennessee.

Student learning with ETHS

Bring your students to the museum or let us bring the museum to you! ETHS offers several programs that are adaptable for grades K-12. Each museum visit includes a program and a tour through the gallery. 

For schools in East Tennessee that are not able to travel to Knoxville, ETHS offers outreach and virtual programming.

National History Day

ETHS serves as a mentor and advisor to students and teachers participating in all phases of National History Day, from schools to nationals. Teachers or schools interested in learning more about including NHD in their curriculums are welcome to reach out to ETHS for further information and guidance.

ETHS is the originator and coordinator of the East Tennessee History Day Regional competition. This contest will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2023.
