Churches often write mission statements, hopefully discerning from scripture what it is that God has called the church to do. Despite that, this is a topic of considerable debate.

John Stott was a great figure in the Christian church in the twentieth century. According to this video, he changed his mind from believing that the mission of the church was to preach the gospel, to believing that the church's mission also involves socio-political action.
E.S. Williams disagrees but he is not necessarily right. On the other hand, he might be.
