Ottawa is home to Canada's government that sits and works in historic buildings full of beautiful architecture and meaningful stories. The various parliament buildings are open for public tours, but tickets must be reserved in advance. You can also visit the grounds, and marvel at the centennial flame that symbolizes Canada's unity and was built to honour the 100th anniversary of the country.
The Byward Market is a famous area of downtown Ottawa, that is home to restaurants, bars, and stalls full of local vendors and artisans selling their produce and merchandise. Be sure to grab a "Beaver tail" or an "Obama cookie" to munch on while you explore! In the evening, the area is a major center for Ottawa's nightlife.
Sparks Street is home to an open air mall and pedestrian promenade feature shops and restaurants, as well as historic architecture and modern art! In the summer the street comes alive with live music and other special events. This is also the home of Ottawa's Haunted Walk ghost tour of downtown.
Ottawa is home to many national museums, some of which are located close to the University of Ottawa Campus,
and some that have extended hours in the summer or on Thursday evenings.
