SEMINAR 2025
Dimension, the official Mathematical Society of Motilal Nehru College, hosted a successful seminar on Actuarial Science Awareness, presented by the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI) and guided by Ms. Lipika Chopra.
What is an Actuary?
Ms. Chopra defined an Actuary as a professional with advanced mathematical skills who measures and manages risk and uncertainty. Essentially, Actuarial Science is a discipline that assesses financial risks across the insurance, finance, and other fields, using rigorous mathematical and statistical methods.
Actuaries are fundamentally problem solvers who work to:
Identify
Quantify
Mitigate
Career and Opportunities Actuarial Science is a highly respected, recession-proof profession offering strong job security and high salary levels. Traditional areas include Life, Property & Casualty, Pension, and Health Insurance. The field also offers emerging roles in Data Science, Quant, Investment, Fintech, Machine Learning, Business Analytics, and Pricing. The curriculum relies heavily on Statistics, Data Science, Calculus, and Finance.
Key Benefits and Path: The profession is ideal for students with a strong interest in applied Mathematics. Key benefits include excellent growth opportunities and high chances of getting a job quickly. Employers often provide support by bearing educational expenses and granting study leave. The official body for actuaries in India is the IAI, and students must seek membership and clear its professional examinations.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ms. Lipika Chopra for empowering our students with such valuable career guidance!

“Chakravyuh” – A competitive chess tournament that attracted players from various colleges and showcased strategic brilliance.
"Mandala Art Competition" – A creative platform for students to explore symmetry, geometry, and patterns through visual art inspired by mathematics.
A range of fun games, logic-based activities, and workshops that kept participants engaged and energized throughout the two days.
FRACTAL 2025 was a vibrant blend of academics and creativity, reinforcing Dimension’s commitment to promoting mathematics in a multifaceted and enjoyable way.
IMD TRIP
Educational Visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)
On 6th March 2025, Dimension organized an educational visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi. The visit was aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of how mathematics is crucial to meteorology, climate modeling, and weather forecasting. During the visit, students attended a detailed presentation by IMD experts, who explained how mathematical models, statistical tools, and computational techniques are employed to predict weather patterns and analyze climate data.
Students also got the opportunity to see meteorological instruments and data processing systems firsthand, linking theoretical knowledge to practical applications. The visit offered a valuable perspective on career opportunities in meteorology and data science and was highly appreciated by all attendees.
AAYAM 2024 – A Celebration of Mathematical Thought
One of the major highlights of the year was AAYAM 2024, conducted on 21st October 2024, which witnessed an enthusiastic participation from students across disciplines. The event began with an inspiring and insightful lecture by Dr. Nilam, Associate Professor at Delhi Technological University (DTU), who spoke on "Real-Life Applications of Mathematics.” Her talk explored how mathematical principles underpin various aspects of everyday life—ranging from finance, engineering, and data science to medical imaging and cryptography. The session not only deepened students’ appreciation of the subject but also motivated them to explore interdisciplinary career paths.
The event also hosted “Mathmosphere”, a mathematics-based competition that challenged participants with logical puzzles, analytical problems, and real-world scenarios requiring mathematical reasoning. Alongside this, a series of interactive quizzes, fun games, and skill-based competitions were organized, creating a balanced environment of learning and recreation. AAYAM 2024 successfully reflected Dimension’s vision of making mathematics accessible, enjoyable, and relevant for all.
"Mathematics Modelling Aspects of Weather Forecasting" by Dr. Shashi Kant
The Mathematics Society of Motilal Nehru College hosted a seminar on "Mathematics Modelling Aspects of Weather Forecasting" by Dr. Shashi Kant from the Indian Meteorological Department. Dr. Kant discussed the crucial role of mathematics in weather forecasting, particularly for events like cricket matches. He highlighted the use of differential equations and initial value problems to understand atmospheric variables such as pressure, wind, temperature, and water vapor.
Key topics included problem identification, data collection methods (surface, upper air, satellite, and radar), model formulation, and the importance of bias correction. Dr. Kant emphasized the need for supercomputers to solve complex equations and the significance of timely observations at 8:30 am and 5:30 pm (UTC).
The seminar concluded with a discussion on enhancing collaboration between the Indian Meteorological Department and academic institutions to improve forecasting accuracy. Dr. Kant's insights underscored the need for ongoing research in the mathematical aspects of weather forecasting. The organizing committee thanked him and the Mathematics Society for facilitating the event
