Editing- Longer Projects

The resources in this section are ideal when you have a number of video clips that you want to compile into a short piece of film. Each digital tool below will also allow you to add narration, music, sound effects, text, overlays, filters, transitions, etc to your digital story.

iMovie: iOS Users (Free Resource- Mac and iPad App)

This is the most commonly used video editor I find pupils/students gravitate towards as it is a free resource on the iPads/ Macs they are using, either in school or personally at home. It is a very easy editor to use and as a result it is the one I come across most often in educational settings. It allows users to import video and photographic media, include music and narration, split clips and add text/ transitions/ filters, etc.

VideoPad: Android Users (Free Resource- For Windows, Mac and App- with fee to unlock additional features)

As it can be very hard to now source Windows Movie Maker, I have found that VideoPad by NCH Software is a great substitute. The interface is quite similar to iMovie. The free version has all the basic features needed, but if editing a short film some of the paid for features will most likely be required.

WeVideo: (Free Resource- For Windows, Mac and iOS & Android App-with fee to unlock addition features)

WeVideo is a very nice website/ app that allows the user to create a project using video footage and digital imagery. There are some really nice features that can be used for free, such as title cards, certain themes, music and effects. There are also a host of other features, such as green screening, motion titles and screencasting can be 'unlocked' for a fee.

Filmora Go: Both iOS and Android Users (Free)

I have recently come across this resource for video editing by Wondershare Software and I really like it. It some some lovely features, like adding subtitles, that make the possibilities for using this for educational purposes endless. The interface is very easy to use, adding clips one at a time and then applying the additional features. It's also free to download.

Adobe Premier Rush: iOS, MacOS and Windows Users (Free Starter Pack (3 vids) & Paid plans)

Adobe Premier Rush is a great resource for editing shorter and longer film projects. What I really like about this tool in particular is the intuitive in-build linkage to media options and creative cloud , as well as the nifty title formats (see image below). If you are creating shorter videos for social media, this is a fantastic way to do it. For longer projects it's ideal too, with all the usual features you would expect in a user-friendly format. With the FREE starter pack you can create and share 3 projects. Beyond this you'll need to sign up for one of their paid plans. There are special rates available for students and teachers.
