PageBoy is currently in the concept and research stage. The console shown on this website is a 3D concept model and not yet a physical product.
The next milestone is to build the first prototype using commercially available components and demonstrate 60 Hz e-paper gaming.
I want a console that can fit in a pocket, that can easily be carried around, but is still comfortable to play for extended period of time. I chose the size of the original DS, but with a single 4.3" screen. For the controls, staying in the spirit of retro consoles, I chose a D-pad, four face buttons, and two shoulder buttons.
Being a software engineer with limited hardware experience, I am currently looking for hardware partners or collaborators who can help me bring the prototype together.
I have opted for an Orange Pi Zero 3W, which is a very capable board for gaming while not using too much power. The screen controller will be "Glider" from Wenting Zhang paired with an 800x600 E-Ink screen.
Can a compact handheld provide a genuinely playable 60 Hz e-paper gaming experience?
The refresh rate might be 60Hz, but there seems to be a slower response time than on a LCD screen. Is it acceptable? Can we improve on it?
Screen lifespan could be a concern. The screen needs to stay sharp for years. Bigme updated their firmware to allow 60Hz and their screen is reportedly expected to have 2 to 5 years lifespan before it starts degrading.
