In 2021, I was into pixel art and started entertaining the idea of a Pixel Art retro style console but with original games, a bit what the Playdate ended up doing.
I stumbled on an ReMarkable ad and got really excited at the idea of a Pixel Art e-Ink console.
After a bit of research, I quickly realized that the frame rate of e-Ink was abysmal and the console idea got shelved.
Fast forward to August 2026, I came across this video from Wenting Channel "Eink But fast". Wenting Zhang wanted to make an e-Ink laptop and made a custom screen controller for e-Ink that has a 60 Hz refresh rate.
Suddenly, my idea from 2021 came flooding back and I haven't been able to ignore it. Imagine a handheld console where the drawings seem to be coming alive on paper.
With no backlight, long play sessions will be more comfortable, and battery life should be exceptional.
The M5 Stack Paper S3 allows direct access to pixels bypassing the default screen controller, Wenting Zhang was able to implement a gameboy emulator that runs impressively smoothly.
DYI Electronics is running "Return of the Obra Dinn" on an EInk display using Modo Glider Screen Controller showing the magic of gaming on EInk.
BoMadeIt got GameBoy emulator running on an ESP32 at 30FPS and 4 shades of grey
