Digital Traces of Anatolia :
A Virtual Journey into Anatolian Motifs with Youth
This project aims to introduce young people to the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia through digital representations of traditional kilim and lace (oya) motifs. Designed as a virtual exhibition, the project seeks to both preserve cultural values and enhance digital skills among youth.
Traditional handicrafts are among the most meaningful cultural elements that reflect a society’s history, beliefs, and lifestyle. Kilim and oya motifs in Anatolia are filled with symbolic meanings passed down through generations. In the digital age, awareness of these motifs among the youth is diminishing. This project intends to bridge cultural heritage and digital creativity.

From 3 to 6 July 2025, we participated in the ‘Social Hackathon Umbria2025’ organised by EGInA – European Grants International Academy, Crhack Lab F4D, and Screen2 Soul in Spello, Italy, as guests of the Europeana Organisation. During the hackathon, where we also presented our ‘Digital Traces of Anatolia’ project, we had a wonderful time with participants from 25 countries. At the hackathon, we formed new groups with peers from different countries, developed new projects with the support of our mentors, and presented these projects. We also improved our digital skills in software such as 3D, AR, and VR. Additionally, we made wonderful friendships in the stunning beauty of the town of Spello.
We were finalists in the "Europeana Digital Creativity Lab" organized by Europeana with a group we formed from 4 different schools. With the final presentation held on May 30, 2025, we were entitled to participate in the "Spello Digital Fest" to be held in Italy between July 3-6, as a guest of the Europeana Organization.
We would like to thank the organizers of "The Digital Creativity Lab" Hacklaton, Europeana Organization, EGInA SRL Organization, CRHACK LAB FOLIGNO 4D, Altheo Valentini, Christine Hveding and Julie Van Oyen, Paolo Russo for the mentoring support they gave us. Our students have gained a great opportunity for their future education with the knowledge and skills they have acquired. They will also be role models for their peers.
