You’re about to take your first step toward becoming a confident typist, and it all begins with the home row keys. This row is your typing “home base,” and learning to place your fingers here is the foundation for speed and accuracy.
Place your left-hand fingers on A, S, D, and F, and your right-hand fingers on J, K, L, and the semicolon (;). You’ll feel small bumps on F and J—those help you stay centered without looking down. Thumbs rest on the space bar.
Watch the quick video to see how to position your fingers. You'll learn how to sit properly and how your fingers move from the home row to other keys.
Log in to Typing.com and start your first lesson for free. Begin with basic patterns like “asdf jkl;” to train your muscle memory. It might feel a little awkward at first, but with practice, it gets easier—and faster!
You're doing great. Let’s build those skills and have some fun while we’re at it!
