District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Chamba was established in 1994 in compliance to achieve the goal in the National Policy of Education, 1986 to play a meaningful role in the education system. Earlier in Chamba District there was a BTS (Basic Training School) in Chowari and in the year 1994 it was shifted and upgraded to DIET Chamba at Saru. Its situated in rural hilly area and is 11 K.M. from Chamba District head quarter on the Chamba Pathankot highway. (Map attached).
It is situated in the serene environment overlooking Bhadharkali lake. The total area of campus is 2.24 hectares and total carpet area of the building is 1296 sq. km. which includes administrative block (Principal's office, Class rooms and seminar hall and labs) hostels (Boys & Girls). Play ground is under development (Approx. 1800 sq feet) South-eastern aspect of the institute is endowed with rich floral species mainly consists of Pinus rouxanburgii and saplings of Cidrus deodara. North-western aspect mainly consists of Liusneia and Pinus rouxanburgii.
The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), managed by Principal DIET and is a nodal institute of the district for all the activities of SSA (Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan) at the district. All the lecturers of DIET Chamba are working as ex-officio coordinator for running all the interventions under SSA/RMSA along with pre-service teacher training to student teachers of D. El. Ed. training programme.
District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) is a nodal agency for providing academic and resource support at the grassroot level for the success of various strategies and programmes undertaken in the areas of elementary and adult education with special reference to Universalisation of Primary Elementary Education and National Literacy Mission (NLM) targets with regards to functional literacy in 15-35 age group. DIETS are the special institutions established with the special aim of improving primary education.
The major functions of DIETs arc pre-service education at primary level, in-service education to primary teachers and non-formal and adult education functionaries, resource support to primary schools and adult education centres and action research in the area of Primary Education and Adult Education.
