Program Learning Outcome 7 (PLO7)

Communicate and collaborate with colleagues and communities

This PLO covers written and oral communication, as well as collaboration within an organization and with its external partners. Communication and collaboration are essential for understanding and achieving goals in an efficient manner as well as building healthy work relationships.

7.1 Oral Communication

My Capstone Project at Mixxer Community Makerspace required communicating verbally with a variety of people. My lessons on different equipment were all given verbally, both in group classes and one-on-one. The On-Demand nature of teaching at Mixxer required me (and all members) to literally speak up and ask for help with each new element of the project. I collaborated with expert members on certain equipment having multiple discussions about the elements to include in a basic introduction, what is too advanced and should be left out, and the best order to present the topics. Finally, the videos I produced have an oral component. One comment I received in the anonymous evaluations was, "These videos are amazing! Dense with information but paced really well so as to not be overwhelming."

7.2 Communication Written

My work at my capstone site included written communication in many forms. I shared important information about schedules and project updates through email with my site supervisor. I created written outlines and scripts for my instructional products which were shared with teams of experts. And I produced written maintenance forms and infographics to be used by staff and members of the makerspace. My site supervisor commented that my work was "like a librarian did it," explaining that to him that meant my words were professional and articulate.

7.3 Collaborate within a library or information organization

I love sharing what I do and supporting other library staff as they try something new. I have presented my work at staff development days several times. Here is a recording from 2020 when our staff day was not in person and programming staff were struggling to approach programs in a new way. I answered questions at the end of the presentation, then collaborated with staff at other branches to share resources and assist them in beginning their own asynchronous programs.

As an officer for LISSA, I collaborated with other members to plan and execute CritLib sessions. We proposed topics, selected content to discuss, made materials accessible through Jackson Library, agreed upon dates, set up Zoom sessions, designed polls for participants, and shared in the facilitation of the events.

7.4 Collaborate with external constituencies

I have collaborated with external organizations through projects such as National Poetry Month, for which I created a poetry contest, set up a storywalk, and decorated town with sidewalk chalk poems all in collaboration with local government and small businesses. This Wakelet I created in LIS 635 shows the month's poetry activities, community partners, and additional poetry resources. My reliable communication and consistent collaboration have led to local partners reaching out to me for new ways to work together such as partnering on grant proposals and public art projects.
