Mrs. Nichols has been the head director of D. Fabian Middle School since 2017 and teaches the Symphonic Band, as well as beginner flute, double reed, clarinet, saxophone, and beginning percussion classes.
Nichelle Nichols was an American actress, singer, and trailblazer. In 1966, Nichols was cast as Lieutenant Commander Uhura in Star Trek, which marked one of the first times that an African American actress was portrayed in a non-stereotypical role on television. In 1975, Nichols established Women in Motion, Inc., a company that produced educational materials using music as a teaching tool and was expanded to become an astronaut recruitment tool after Nichols won a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This resulted in thousands of women and minorities applying to NASA’s space program such as Sally Ride, Judith Resnik, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, and Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman Nichols' impact on both popular culture and the scientific community has been profound, solidifying her legacy as a pioneer for racial equality and representation in media and beyond.
Mr. Stewert is the assistant director at D. Fabian Middle School and has been in his position since 2020. Mr. Stewert teaches the Concert Band, as well as beginner trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba classes.

He made his professional debut in 1959 in the repertory theatre in Lincoln; he worked at the Manchester Library Theatre and a tour around the world with the Old Vic Company followed in the early 1960s. Stewart joined
the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, to begin his 27-year association. Following a spell with the Royal National Theatre in the mid-1980s, he went to Los Angeles, California to star in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) Mr. Stewart continues to work on the stage and in various films. He was awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 2010 Queen's New Year's Honours List for his services to drama.

The D. Fabian Middle School was named after clarinet teacher Deborah Fabian for the impact she had on the students at the University of North Texas through her work as a clarinet professor. Founded in 1983, the D. Fabian Middle School band has grown to 200 students and competes in festivals and concerts around the DFW metroplex. We're the only middle school in FISD and we're a growing district! As our city grows we hope to also grow our band program and provide enriching opportunities for the students within our classes.
