I explored how social media impacts me and society in this project.
Doing the “AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?” QUIZ made me realize that I do use social media too much, but I am slowly working on it. My result after the quiz stated, You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?
After reading the results from the quiz, I have been tracking how much I use social media. I want to slowly start removing myself off all my social platforms. I have implemented only being on social media 4 hours out of my day during the week and 8 hours on the weekends. Taking this step will definitely help me remove myself off of social media by the end of the year.
Personally the most interesting statistic in the Pew Research Article is the one shown in the image. This shows the percetage of people that use each social media platform. Personally, I watch Youtube a lot and have not use Facebook in years. So for Facebook to still have a high percentage of people using it is very shocking and impressive.
In my opinion social media can have a positive influence on society but also can have a negative influence on society. I feel like social media's negative influence overlaps the positive influence that it has. Social media has become one of the highest addictions in the U.S today. People comparing themselves to influencers they see on social media has really impacted society today. The mental and physical influence that social media has over people has been happening for many years now and does not seem as though it will change any time soon. Social media makes it easy for people to communicate but also makes it easy for people to live a life of facade.
I have learned that I spend a lot of my precious time on social media, when I could be doing something more productive. I have also learned that Facebook and YouTube are still one of the top most used social media platforms till this day. Youtube has been the platform that I use and spend most of my time on. I always wanted to become an influencer especially when I was younger, but the negative influence that social media has, made me shy away from that career.
