Hi, my name is Devon and I am 17 years old. I love to be outside wether it is hiking, swimming, skiing, tanning, or exploring. I haven't lived in Vermont my whole life, I have been all over the country because of my moms job. I really enjoy living in Vermont though, as much as I miss my other homes.
It is hard to put into words what the environment means to me, the environment is something that impacts me everyday, like all people. My whole life I have been exposed to the outdoors due to my family being huge on hiking, skiing, swimming, etc.
My mother works for the US Forest Service so I grew up knowing about our enviroment and the impacts every organism has on it. Her knowledge has helped my understanding of our world profoundly. I have also participated in a semester long program called the Mountain Campus at my school. During the semester I learned about Vermonts ecology, history, and spent lots of time outside. I went on 2 backpacking trips which both lasted a week and in May of last year I spent two days alone in the woods. That time alone let me focus on the little things around me, from the tiniest little snail to the biggest tree. That experience changed my perspective about our world. I have since grown closer to the environment and respect it more than I have in the past.
The environment and nature will forever be extremely important to me. The reason I am doing this program and have done similar programs likr this in the past is because I feel that my generation and the next to come are crucial to build back what we have destroyed over the years. Although the change of climate and health of our earth cannot be reversed, we can only progress and make positive impacts starting now.
After 4 days in the woods without taking my hat off once.
