Manoa Bakery Cafe: Coffee & Cake

Every day I had a delay between buses on my return home from the climbing gym, and so I would stop at this small pastry shop called Manoa Bakery Cafe. They have fantastic authentic Korean bakeries, drinks, and ice cream! It's also a cozy little place to read a book or do some work.

Chaia Tacos

This is a lovely little taco shop snuggled right next to Chinatown! The food was absolutely delicious, super filling, and very fresh. Definitely worth coming back to this place to try more wonderful flavor combinations!!

Dolcezza Gelato & Coffee

This is a really cute gelato shop also within a walk's distance of Chinatown, but closer to the National Mall. Although it is a bit more expensive, they give generous portions of ice cream - our small had two very, very large scoops that nearly overflowed the bounds of the cup in which it was served. Their staff are also really nice and will give you samples to help you decide what you want. They have the full range of flavors, from fruity to chocolatey to coffe-y (?). Best of all, their gelato tastes wonderful! We had Blueberry Lavender and Passionfruit together, enjoying every last bit!! If you want to take some home, they have pint sized servings of their gelato available in lots (if not all) of their flavors.

Bus Boys and Poets!

This is a strange little "bookstore" on the outskirts of the National Mall (maybe a 15-20 minute walk from the Capitol). It is more cafe and then some books, but it has good food. Their tea is great! They hand you a tea kettle full of hot water and a cup and a really nice tea satchel, and then you brew your own tea. It is quite enjoyable. We also had some great mezze; it's a great size to share if you go with some buddies!

Baked and Wired!

Really fun cupcake shop in Georgetown with many different flavors of cupcakes. The cupcakes here are BIG (my pistachio cupcakes was at least 4 inches tall!). There's lots of live music. I got to eat my cupcake while listening to some lovely live guitar music. It's an easy 15-20 minute walk from DC, and it easily connects to Rock Creek Trail which leads straight to the back of the Lincoln Memorial.

Momofuku Milkbar

Disappointment. Maybe I expected too much from the place that advertises itself for making milkshakes from the leftover milk from cereal, but it really wasn't worth the wait or the walk. It was just average. But if you're curious, give it a swing! Just be prepared for a long wait and a sub-par frozen milk-cereal food item (treat?).

Le Pain Quotidien

This place was NOT disappointing! It was an absolutely lovely breakfast after running on the National Mall. It was filling and delicious and wonderful. Out of concern for the safety of those around me, I don't really drink coffee. However, I took a little sip of a friend's coffee, and it was delicious! Their pastries looked delicious, but I didn't try any. If anything, grab some coffee and a pastry and watch life on the Capitol roll by!!

Jubilee Ice Cream

This is a nice nom nom. The texture of this ice cream is great. I had the Thai Milk Tea with sprinkles, and it was delicious! They had a lot of different flavors. This one wasn't too sweet, and I enjoyed it in the mid-summer heat.

This is the part of my blog where I admit to failure (but probably not for the first time!). I cannot write reviews for all the really cool, super weird places I ate, but I do have lots of pictures. If it doesn't have a negative comment, it was really good and definitely worth a try!

Ramen at Bantam King

Falouda at Toli Moli in Union Market

Mitsitam Native Foods Cafe

(In the National Native American Museum)

Presidential Scoops

Average. Not bad. Kind of fun ice cream names, but not the best.

Goodies Custard and Treats

(In the basement of the Department of Agriculture)

This was by far my favorite frozen treat that I discovered. They have a food truck, but they also have a location in the basement of the Department of Agriculture. They sell Wisconsin-style frozen custard, and it is delicious. I got a brownie sandwich, which is a brownie cut in half with at least five large scoops of vanilla (or chocolate) frozen custard all of which is covered generously with dark chocolate syrup and sprinkles. It was so much fun getting security clearance just to get custard plus it was wonderfully delicious!! The staff is super nice (I had a lovely conversation with Rosel), and the store is in the style of an old-diner. Try to visit and enjoy some great custard!!
