LEADERSHIP: the action of leading a group of people or an organization
LEADERSHIP DEFINED BY US: leadership is not just leading a group to meet a common goal but it is important to instead lead by EXAMPLE and WITH the community you wish to serve in.
LEADERSHIP WE SAW IN DETROIT-
Tyree Guyton from the Heidelberg Project: Tyree had a vision for his neighborhood and had this idea that junk can be used to create something beautiful. He had a goal and wanted people to see Detroit in a different light by creating this project in his old neighborhood by using abandoned homes and what people would consider as junk.
Chelsea from the NOAH Project: Chelsea cared deeply about people experiencing homelessness, and everyone can't access to a meal at some time in their life. She saw that the homeless epidemic was taking over Detroit, and by partnering with others to create a space for the homeless to recieve a meal, get a haircut, look for jobs, and etc.
Patrick from the Urban Farming Project: Patrick knew that there were other organizations that had food pantries, but he wanted to be different. He made it possible for the urban population to have access to a food pantry and a garden, which exposed them to healthier food options. Healthier food is expensive so he has a variety of options that people can use to get food from them including being able to use food stamps.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT LEADERSHIP-
Servant leadership: Servant leadership is serving with the community and not to it.
Balance: Being in a leadership position can be a stressful job, that's why it's important to find time for self-care and serving others.
Genuine: Why put yourself in a leadership position to serve others if you don't want to? Being honest with yourself and having a passion for serving is very important so you don't hurt others along the way.
