What Are Design Sprints & Hustles?

Design Hustles are designed to be short (often 10-15 minutes) activities to help students think creatively. They can also be used as energizers in some cases. Design Sprints, by contrast, are designed to be longer activities that encompass a full Design Thinking cycle and often take several days for students to complete. Design Sprints focus on empathy and solving problems that impact humans. Design sprints may or may not include a specific focus on empathy; instead, they help students who may be stuck or need something to help them detach and refocus their energies in different ways.

Design Hustle #1 - Can You Cut A Hole Large In Paper to Pass Your Body Through?

In this Design Hustle, you will be challenged to use a sheet of paper and a pair of scissors to create a hole big enough to pass your body through. Believe it or not, it can be done. This Design Hustle will help students to develop resiliency as this activity often involves not being successful the few couple of times. But this is a keystone of the Design Thinking process. Students learning how to deal and work with failure can be a powerful transformative experience for students.

Materials Needed:

  • Sheet of Notebook Paper (you can also use a notecard to create a more challenging experience for your students)

  • Pair of Scissors

Post an image of your tower to the Padlet.

Solution (To be posted after session is complete)

Design Hustle #2 - Creating Towers

In this Design Hustle, students will be challenged to use the provided materials to create a free standing tower. Designers must use all the materials needed in their design and the tower must stand for a minimum of 10 seconds.

Materials Needed:

  • Marshmallows (large to medium size recommended; if you do not these readily available, you can substitute pieces of bread shaped into balls) (10 large marshmallows)

  • Spaghetti Noodles (10 noodles)

Post an image of your tower to the Padlet.

Alternative Procedures for Consideration:

  • Provide tape (suggested to include a fixed length of tape) to assist.

  • Decide if students can break the spaghetti noodles into pieces.

  • Have students develop rules for the challenge prior to starting.

  • Have a ruler or meter stick to measure the height of the tower for a more competitive experience.

Assessing Design Hustles

Meet the Single Point Rubric

  • Space for reflection,

  • Focus isn't on the number grade,

  • No boundaries placed on student,

  • Takes away the element of competition,

  • Allows for flexibility while maintaining clarity,

  • Super simple to create!
