Barriers to Learning and the UDL

What is barriers to learning?

Learning barriers in education are any physical, cognitive, environmental, and emotional barriers that create an obstacle for the learner's ability to access, process, and demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge.

What is Universal Design for Learning (UDL)?

Universal Design for learning (UDL) is a educational framework that focuses on creating a inclusive learning environment by meeting all diverse learners needs through research-based strategies (CAST, 2026).

How Does Learning Barriers and UDL Tie into our Lesson Plan?

In my lesson plans, I had to identify several barriers that could potential hurt the student's ability to learn the material that is being taught. With research and utilizing the UDL's guidelines, we were able to identify potential problems and find assistive technology solutions that would support our learners. By proactively reducing learning barriers, the lesson will become more accessible to learners and include everyone.

Barriers to Learning Chart

The UDL Barrier Analysis chart identifies potential barriers that college students may experience when learning about time management from my lesson. Each barrier identifies who will be impacted, how to adjust the design of the lesson, and assistive technology solutions to reduce the challenges for the learners and improve accessibility for all learners.
