Exercise 8: Ethics and Liability

8.1: Ethical Issues

• Our SDR system is mostly for military use, therefore, commercial use could be dangerous and raise some ethical issues

• Could be used for intercepting and jamming signals

  • Privacy could be at risk, e.g. text messages, emails, phone calls/medical calls, pagers

  • Decoding voice channels

  • Iridium is at risk, used for private calls but could be intercepted and

8.2: Product Liability

• There are many ways to break the law with a SDR:

  • breaking privacy laws, similar to the ethical issues

• It is the responsibility of the user to not break any laws, e.g. listening to private phone calls or stealing pager data

• SDR should be used in a safe work space, e.g. use of anti-static mat

  • If product is discharged incorrectly, the user is liable for damages that may occur

Spent too much time on this part with no results. I most likely messed up something small, but I will come back to this for my own education's sake apart from this class.
