Mesa's collaborative approach to equity-infused course redesign.
Faculty members form their own Faculty Inquiry Groups (FIGs), and submit a proposal related to equity-infused course redesign. Once accepted, FIGs have 8 weeks to complete the deliverables. The 8 week timeline is scheduled by the LOFT each semester. Faculty are compensated for completing the deliverables of their FIG.
What is a FIG?
A Faculty Inquiry Group (FIG) is a group of faculty (3 members - 5 members), either cross-disciplinary or from the same discipline, that decide on a common goal for redesigning their courses together. They share ideas, collaborate, and keep each other accountable towards completion of the FIG deliverables, including course redesign.
Faculty who complete their FIG deliverables by the deadline receive compensation.*
FIG facilitator: .5 ESU
FIG members: .25 ESU
* Note the change in compensation amounts starting Spring 22.

Q: Can I be a part of multiple FIGs?
A: In the past we've allowed folks to be part of multiple FIGs, and it's been too much to juggle. So we're asking folks to just join one FIG per semester.
Q: Can I have more than 5 people in a single FIG?
A: No. If there’s a second person willing to be FIG facilitator and enough people for a second FIG on that same topic, you could split into two sister FIGs.
Q: Can a furloughed faculty member be compensated for participating in a FIG?
A: No.
Q: Can a faculty member on sabbatical be compensated for participating in a FIG?
A: No.
Q: Can a pro-rata faculty member be compensated for participating in a FIG?
A: Dean's approval will be necessary.
Q: Can I work on a FIG by myself?
A: No. Consider working on an independent project through the Flex system.
Q: Can a PT faculty member be compensated for participating in a FIG?
A: Yes. As long as the compensation doesn't put them over the 67% max load.
Q: Can a PT faculty without a current teaching assignment be compensated for participating in a FIG?
A: Dean's approval will be necessary.
