"Volunteering for Desert Fence Busters is an amazing experience. I encourage anyone who cares about the wonderful wildlife in the beautiful Sonoran Desert to volunteer."

How do I connect and sign up?
To get started, visit the Contact Us page to notify the organization that you are interested in getting involved. Registration for events is handled by Arizona Game & Fish through the Arizona Game & Fish Volunteer Portal.
How long is each event?
The length of the events varies depending on the scope of work. The group typically meets early (~7am) and works rigorously until a break around noon. Most volunteers will continue to work in the afternoon until the planned fence removal is complete.
When is the next event?
The schedule of events is posted on a variety of sites including the DFB Events webpage, the AZGF Volunteer Portal and the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection (CSDP) Events webpage.
Do I need training?
Training is not required but all volunteers are strongly encouraged to complete the Desert Fence Busters e-Orientation. Detailed answers to these FAQs are included in the e-Orientation.
I am kinda old, is there a role for me?
Desert Fence Busters who work in the field need to be in good health and be sure footed. Good balance is important as well. To learn about other opportunities to support the organization, besides field work, please contact any member of the leadership team.
Do I need a 4WD truck?
Usually, no. For most events, a 4WD truck is not required but a high clearance vehicle is advantageous since the roads to the meeting locations are sometimes rocky and washed out.
Are there snakes and other potential dangers?
Yes, volunteers should be aware that snakes may be in the area where fences are being removed. The desert is full of natural and manmade risks, so paying attention to terrain, weather, and burrows is important.
Should I get a tetanus shot?
Yes, it is highly recommended that you have a current tetanus shot.
What tools are provided?
As covered in the e-Orientation, all of the necessary tools, including loppers, 14” and 18” bolt cutters and heavy duty gloves are provided.
Is there food?
Yes. Events typically begin with coffee and bagels or other breakfast items. Snacks and drinks with electrolytes are provided throughout the day. Volunteers are encouraged to bring water in a refillable container, a sack lunch and additional snacks, if desired.
Do we camp out?
In some cases, camping is an option for 2-day events. Details about camping opportunities are shared with volunteers who register to work the events.
