The department was established in 1956 at the same time of The College foundation. Some of the eminent teachers who have served this department were Pulin Behari Bera, Dilip Pan, Jyotirmoy Mukherjee, Mohini Mohan Maity, Amit Debnath, Gadadhar Mondal, Gopinath Laha, Monotosh Baishya, Barasha Biswas. The department has yielded very successful students in its glorious past. The Department offers 4-year B.Sc. Major/Minor course and 3-year Multidisciplinary course in Under Graduate level. It also takes active part in interdisciplinary courses offered by other departments such as Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Biochemistry and Economics.

The syllabus of the mathematics honours Course of the University of Calcutta has been so indigenously crafted that the students may develop expertise in the various aspects of Mathematics and prepare themselves for various competitive examinations.
