The Department of Chemistry, established in 1968, was the first to offer postgraduate courses in Chemical Sciences to students from the Saurashtra region. The department has a long legacy of veterans, beginning with Prof. K. A. Thakar. Since 1982, this Department has had the honour to offer Analytical Chemistry as a special branch throughout the Western Region. The Department is one of the University's premier departments, with over 235 Ph.Ds and over 500 research papers published in journals of well-repute. This is reflected in the cumulative citations of about 3000 over the last five years, as well as the cumulative H-index of 53. The Department offers four specializations Inorganic, Organic, Physical, and Analytical Chemistry. The research areas are broadly classified as under.
Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal including pharmaceutical and Green Chemistry.
Hetero-chelates, Coordination polymer, Zeolite encapsulated Schiff base complexes.
Surface Chemistry, Colloidal & Polymer Chemistry
Extraction of natural ingredients from medicinally important plants and their biological screening.

CSIR-CS&MCRI દ્વારા આંતરરાષ્ટીય માતૃભાષા દિવસની ઉજાણી ના ભાગ રૂપે તા. 06/03/2024ના રોજ CSIR-CS&MCRI ના આમંત્રણ પર આમંત્રિત વાર્તાલાપ આપવા જવાનું થયું. "વિજ્ઞાન અને માતૃભાષા વચ્ચેનો સબંધ" એ વાર્તાલાપના વિષય પર આપણી માર્તુભાષામાં વાર્તાલાપ કરવાનો એક નવો અનુભવ મળ્યો. વિજ્ઞાનની સમજ જો માતૃભાષામાં આપવામાં આવે તો મારા ખ્યાલ મુજબ મોટી સંખ્યામાં વિદ્યાર્થીઓને વિજ્ઞાન વિષય તરફ આકર્ષિત કરી શકાય અને જેનો લાભ આગળ જતા સમાજને મળે.
