Semester 1 CC 1.1 : Understanding Political Theory : Concepts

Students of political science honors are being introduced with the key concepts in politics. They are also being taught about concepts like State, rights, justice, democracy and so on, which would enable them to go through the basic political issues in relation to Indian political system. Theoretical understanding increases the analytical skill of political happenings both in India and abroad.

Semester 1 cc1.2 Understanding Political Theory : Approaches and Debates

Students would get a basic idea on different debates and approaches in political science. Students will learn various traditional as well as modern approaches to the study of political science, which would help understand the subject in a better manner. Students are exposed to various concepts and ideologies in political science. Students can understand and comprehend various political events in real life through their overall idea about different concepts and ideas.

Semester 2 CC 2.3: Constitutional Government in India

The basic objective of this paper is to impart the basic knowledge about constitutional development in India after 1947 along with different constitutional provisions incorporated in the constitution . the students through this paper are to develop their idea on governmental structures and functions of different organs of the government. The federal structure and distribution of power would make the students aware about the political system adopted in India. All these are needed to know the country as well as the process followed y the governments both at the center and states. Thus the students would be competent enough to carry on studies in Post-graduate level and also will be capable of fracing competitive examinations.

Semester 2 CC 2.4: Politics in India: Structures and Processes

Students of this paper will have a clear idea about various features of the Indian political system. The paper helps them understand the basic structure of the political system in India along with various political processes. Detailed understandings of the political system help the students face any interview in future with confidence. The paper creates awareness among students regarding various contending forces in Indian politics. Students would be able to relate various social processes and phenomenon with functioning of the political system.

Semester 3 CC 3.5: Indian Political Thought

In this paper students are introduced with ancient political ideas from the days of Kautilya. The theory of Dandaniti, diplomacy and saptanga of Kautilya not only help the student to know his country’s past but also to look at the medieval and modern political thinking in a scientific manner. Ideas from Rammohan to Gandhi widens the thought process of India through its evolutionary growth makes a student competent about modern India.

Semester 3 CC 3.6: Comparative Government and Politics

Students through this paper can learn the constitutional development as well as organizational structure of governments iat the global level . Through comparative methodology a student can develop a comparative skill to look at the organizational structure of different governments in different countries. In this paper the students can make a comparative estimate of liberal and socialist system as well through the world. The emerging importance of Asian sub-continent is also being prominent through various topics covered in this paper.

Semester 3 CC 3.7 : Perspective on International Relations

Students through this paper get a detailed idea about the evolution of international relations as an independent area of study. Students are taught various theories in international relations, which would assist them to analyze various global events. Students become aware about current global problems and the issues in global society. Students would have a clear concept about the foreign policy of India and its evolution since the independence. Students get a detailed idea about India’s bi-lateral relations with China and US. Students would be able to relate various foreign policy initiatives undertaken by our leaders with the basic concepts like national interest and security.

Semester 4 CC 4.8: Indian Political Thought 2

In this paper students learn the evolution of socialist thinking in India from pre-independent period. The development of socialist thinking of Europe and the west in general and its impact on Indian political thinkers can be understood through this paper. The paper also analyzed the understanding of Jinnah and Savarkar in the background of the partition. This is we feel is of much importance for our students to look at their country with an analytical outlook.

Semester 4 CC 4.9: Global Politics since 1945

The paper gives a clear idea about major global events that the world has witnessed since the end of the Second World War. Students would understand the dynamics behind functioning of various international organizations at global level. Regional organizations are influential actors in world politics; thus having clear about their role would help students understand the dynamics of power politics. Paper gives a in-depth understanding about various aspects of India’s neighborhood policy and position of India visa vie its immediate neighbors. Concepts and ideas taught in this paper would help students find various employment opportunities in non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations.

Semester 4 CC4.10 1

This paper intends to orient the students with a theoretical knowledge about Greek and Roman political thinking . middle ages political development in Europe and interpretation of would help the students to develop the knowledge of political thought. This paper also introduces some curial political thoughts of Greek philosophers for making the students capable to face competitive examinations and to avail higher studies.

Semester 5 CC 5.11 Western Political Thoughts

Students in this paper are introduced to the origin and development of western political thought. They also come to know the political theories of Hegal and Green also. Marxian political thought with its different brands also taught in this paper. Students are also being familiar with post-Marxism and cultural Marxism- latest development in Marxian political thought.

Semester CC 5.12 : Political Sociology-

The students of this paper are introduced with the basic concept of sociology in terms of culture, participation, development, etc.They are also taught certain sociological issue like caste, tribes, class,etc which helps them to understand the pattern of social development in India. They will also acquainted with the relation between religion and politics and electoral behavior which is very much related with present day Indian society.

Semester 6 CCD 6.13: Public Administration-concepts and perspectives-

This paper aims to orient the students with formal concepts and perspectives of public administration. The core theories bureaucracy, unity of command, line and staff, etc are taught by which the students can develop their understanding regarding the theoretical basis of administration. This understanding would enable them to face the competitive exams as well along with the under graduate programme of Calcutta university.

Semester 6 CC6.14: Administration and Public Policy in India

This paper embodies historical background of Indian administration and subsequent advancement in post-independent India. This paper aims to teach the basic administrative structure followed in India today both at center and state. How the government machinery works at different levels and how the administration undertakes developmental work make the students understand about governmental understanding. With this knowledge present day students may become good administrator in future

Semester 5 DSE 5 A (2) : Understanding South Asia

The paper is a part of area studies in the discipline of international relations. The region taught in this paper is South Asia, which is our homeland. Through this paper students will have a detailed about their region and current regional problems. Students would be able to know various unknown facts about their neighboring countries, which would broaden their outlook and make them more sensitive towards smaller nations in our region. Since we are aware of the fact that dynamics of regional politics do impact our domestic politics, students would be able to judge various policies framed by our leaders in a better way.

Semester 5 DSE 5B (10 :Indian foreign policy in a globalizing world-

Indian foreign policy since 1947 has been formulated to represent herself in international scene. Through different stages in the last decade Indian foreign policy has undergone through lots of debatable issues. It has been able to negotiate trade and environment in the changing global scenario. Indias foreign policy towards neighboring states and with super powers has kept an important impact in the political sphere. Students with this knowledge are to be equipped to read Indian foreign policy.

Semester 6 DSE 6A (4) : Understanding Global Politics

The paper gives a detailed idea to our students about the evolution of the modern State system based on the concept of sovereignty. Students are able to understand the dynamics of the global economy today through a detailed study of various transnational organizations and their evolution. Students become aware of various reasons behind tension and conflict in the international society. Students would be able to come up with their own vision about the entire world. The paper would enable students to think about their own career and also what efforts they would be able to put in in order to make this world a better place to live in.

Semester 6 DSE 6B (4) : Human Rights in a comparative perspective-

The issue of human rights is being taught with adequate importance in this paper. Students are oriented with the basics of human rights and its applicability in different countries including India. Other issue like terrorism, insecurity ,minorities are also of vey much importance in relation to human rights. Censorship and violence in respect to human rights as exercised by different governments is also an important area of study.

Semester 3 SEC 3A (1) Democratic awareness through legal literacy-

This paper aims to develop democratic awareness through legal system among the students. Different laws in relation to law and order and criminal jurisdiction helps the students to understand the social environment they live in. Issues like dowry, sexual harassment ,violence against women and cyber crimes are of immense importance in present day society.

Semester 4 SEC 4B (1) Legislative practices and procedures-

The constitutional procedures practiced in our country is being taught to the students. How the parliament and state legislatures works and decentralized executive structures works are explained in detail in this paper. Students can also know the role and function of different committees which constitutes the operational structures of the government,.

Semester 1 PLSG CC1.1: Introduction to Political Theory

Students of the general stream are introduced to the tenants of core political theories like State, sovereignty, Nationalism. They are also enlightened to basics of Marxism and related political ideas. This is believed that students with these basic ideas can compete in any sort of exams to build up their career. As a citizen of India they also come to know the essence of representation, voting behavior and the role of political parties.

Semester 2 PLSG CC 2.2: Comparative Government and Politics

In this paper the political systems of some neighboring countries and countries like UK and USA are taught to the students. This makes them understand the constitutional structure as well as the functioning of the government of different countries. This paper also help the students to develop a skill of comparative analysis of different political systems. These are helpful to them to face any sort of test throughout their career .

Semester 3 PLSG CC 3.3 : Government and Politics in India General

Students through this paper come across the evolution of Indian constitution and various important aspects incorporated in it. They also come to know the different layers of the government and their functioni8ng . the decentralized administrative structures along with local units of governance make them u7ndersytand to go through the administrative functioning. Different social movements with far reaching impact also widen their knowledge about the kinds of movement taken place in post-independent India.

Semester 4 PLSG CC4.4 : International Relations

Students would get a clear idea about the basic concepts in the field of international relations. Knowledge of various approaches to the study of international relations would help our students analyze various global events in a better way. A detailed study of modern global history would help students face any completive exams in future. Students would be able to understand the dynamics of Indian foreign policy and its various determinants. This paper in general is a compact one which gives us an over all idea about global politics and India’s interaction with the rest of the world.

Semester 5 DSE PLSG A5 1B Indian Foreign Policy

This paper looks into the meaning and determinants of Indian foreign policy. They key concept of foreign policy which is national interest is given special focus. Various aspects of foreign policy like diplomacy, propaganda, military etc. are also key theme of this paper. Special focus is given on the basic principles of Indian Foreign policy especially in context to its neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Semester 6 DSE PLSG B6 2B Human Rights – Theory in Indian context

The theory of Human rights, its evolution is the main focus of this paper. Generation of human rights and its historical journey is also elaborately discussed. Universal declaration of human rights, its provisions and significance is studied in international perspective. It also focuses on UN human rights, its charter and other human r4ights bodies. Rights elaborated in the Indian constitution are also looked into through the prism of humans rights. Bodies like National and State Human Rights Commissions, its structure and functions are discussed elaborately.

Semester 3 SEC PLSG 3A1 Legal Literacy

Legal issues of criminal jurisdiction, its history and definition is the main focus of this paper. It studies the major concept and processes such as arrest, bail, search etc. Indian Penal Code – its history and definition are also part of this paper. It also discusses personal laws related to marriage and family affairs. Laws relating to consumer ri8ghts and anti-terror laws, its inception and development during the years is also closely studied.

Semester 4 SEC 4B1 Elementary Dimensions of Research

Research concepts of variables like propositions and hypothesis is an important part of this paper. Ethics in research, its issues and problems faced during research forms the core study of this paper. It also guides into the process of research report writing. Sources and techniques of data collection both quantitative and qualitative are closely analyzed. Statistical method of data analysis and graphic representation of data such as bar graph and pie chart are studied.
