PROGRAMME OUTCOME – B.A General

After successful completion of B.A General Course (3 years) a student can appear in various competitive examinations (Primary Teachers’ Examination, School Service Commission Examination, Staff Selection Commission Examination, examinations conducted by Public Service Commission, Railways, Post and Telegraph, Banking, UPSC, etc.) Further, the student can pursue higher education especially in the Distance mode in any Open University.

PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOME :

History is a subject which allows one to ponder on ‘look before you leap’. Knowledge of past events can empower one with the ability to take prudent decisions for the future. Hence, History becomes indispensible for pursuing a career in various avenues – be it research, education or teaching. We find History being included as a subject in almost all the premier Civil Service examinations like WBCS, IAS or IPS.

COURSE OUTCOME :

Core Course I: History of India from Earliest Times up to 300 CE.

Students will develop a clear idea about the history of early India and the sources and tools to reconstruct Ancient Indian History with different interpretation. They will come to known about the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic cultures. They will learn about the Harrapan civilization, Vedic civilization, condition of India in the sixth century B.C. and what led to the rise of Magadha among the sixteen Mahajanapadas. They will also gather information about the Mauryan empire, rise of protest in India, different foreign invasions like Indo-Greeks, Sakas: Parthians & Kushanas, age of Satvahanas, Sangam literature and three early Kingdoms of South.

Core Course 2: History of India from c.300 to 1206

Students will have an understanding of the rise and growth various Kingdoms in different parts of India during c.300 to1206. Paper will help them to learn about administration, society, economy, religion, art, literature, and science & technology during the reign of Guptas, Harsha in the North India and Kingdoms of South. Paper also explores the changes with references to Pallavas, Chalukyas and Vardhanas. Tripartite struggle between the three powers Rastrakutas, Pala and Pratiharas will also be discussed. The emergence of Rajputana states in Northern India, the capture of Sind by the Arabs and the what led to the establishment of Sultanate in India are pondered over in the paper.

Core Course 3: History of India from1206 to 1707

Students will come to know about the foundation, expansion and consolidation of the Delhi Sultanate. They will also learn about the military, administrative and economic reforms under the Khiljis and Tughlaqs. Provincial kingdoms like Mewar, Bengal, Bahamanis and Vijayanagar are also discussed. Students will learn about the Bhakti and Sufi movements and also get idea about the emergence and consolidation of Mughal state during the 16th and 17the century. The administrative structure, economy, society and culture of the Mughals will also be taught in the course. The emergence of Maratha power will also be discussed,

Core Course 4: History of India from 1707 to 1950

Students are going to examine the character of 18 the century and study the history of expansion and consolidation of colonial power in India and review the major political, social, economic changes pertaining to 18th century. Students will be exposed to the history of popular resistance movements and assess the significance of the many voices of the protest. they are going to identify the varied trends in the emergence of nationalism in colonial India with focus on Gandhian nationalism. Course will teach about the genesis and growth of communalism and the road to partition of India. They will have a clear idea about the advent of freedom and establishment of Indian republic.

Skill Enhancement Course A-1: Historical Tourism: Theory and Practice

Students will learn about heritage and understand the built heritage like Stupa architecture, temple architecture, Indo-Persian architecture, forts, palaces, mosques, colonial architecture, post-colonial architecture. They will also gather knowledge about the heritage through filed survey and conducting research. They will learn about modalities of conducting historical tourism and visit to historical sites and museums.

Skill Enhancement Course B-1: Museums and Archives in India

Students are going to learn the definitions of museums and archives. They will come to know about the history of setting up of museums and archives and follow some case studies. Students will be encouraged to undertake collection, documentation, exhibition, conservation of rare objects and undertake field work in their college and localities. Educational tours to archives and museums are an integral part of the course.

Skill Enhancement Course -A-2: Indian History and Culture

The aim of the course is to make the students familiar with the culture, tradition and practices of environment. The students will come to know about Urbanization and Urbanism, social inequality and gender, cultural Heritage and cultural forms and expressions.

Skill Enhancement Course B-2: Orality and Oral Culture in India

The aim of the course is to define orality, explain the history and historiography of orality. It deals with the life histories, its sociological aspects, the research methodology and provide a greater insight into the written and visual documentation.

Discipline Specific Elective A-1: National Liberation Movement in 20th century World

The aim of the course is to make the students familiar with the theory and practice of Nationalism, the nature of imperialism and colonialism. It illustrate the national movements in Nigeria, Kenya, Congo, Angola and South Africa. It also helps the students to understand the Revolution of 1911 in China, The May fourth Movement, the Cultural Revolution under Mao Tse Tung, the Indonesian Revolution between 1945 to 1949 and lastly the National Movement in India,

Discipline Specific Elective A-2: Some Aspects of European History: c.1780-1945

Students are going to learn about the genesis, nature and consequences of the French revolution, about Napoleonic era and the aftermath, about the revolution of 1830 and 1848, about unification of Italy and Germany. Students will also gain knowledge about industrial revolution and its impact. Course will also provide exposure to the rise of imperialism and its consequences that led to the world wars. Students will learn about Fascism and Nazism, the origin of second world war, Bolshevik revolution of 1917 and the formation of socialism state in Russia.

Discipline Specific Elective B-1: Patterns of Capitalism in Europe: C16th century to early 20th Century

The aim of the course is to make the students understand the definition and concepts of Capitalism. They also come to know about the commercial capitalism(1500-1700), the causes and nature of Industrial Revolution in England, the genesis and nature of industrial capitalism in France. growth of industries in Germany and lastly the impact of industrial Revolution and European society, polity and economy.

Discipline Specific Elective B-2: Some Aspects of Society and Economy of modern Europe: 15th to 18th century

Students are going to learn about the historiographical trends and the main strands of the feudal crisis. They will also have an idea about the origin, spread and features of Renaissance, reformation and its nature and impact. They will also come to know about the colonization, its motives, mining and plantation of African slaves, the economic development during the 16th century and the reasons for the shift of economic balance from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. They will also learn about the transition from Feudalism to capitalism and the industrial revolution in England.
