Established in the year 1961, the Department of History was initially sanctioned with one post which in the year 2014 was increased to two. However, one post is currently lying vacant, which makes it a one-man department for the time being. The Honors Course has not yet been introduced, making it a Department offering General Course at present.

What makes History different from other subjects?

History is the study of an entity with respect to its past, events, people, and other important variables that contributed to what is present in a particular context. As a study, it aims to discover, collect, and interpret data or information from the past. This may be people or artifacts that serve as proof of the human record. History often creates constructions and contributions of the past that are linked to the present.

Why opt for History?

It is said that to go ahead in the future one needs to analyse the past. Starting from early civilizations to industrial revolution, mankind has strived to live creating better environs. The progress has been a complicated one, leading to conflicts and wars which taught man how to take prudent and strategic decisions when the time calls – all of which had contributed in building the society we see today. In short, to know one’s own self better, one needs to look into the past.

Relevance of studying History in the present time.

History as a subject is included in all kinds of competitive examinations starting from primary teachers’ recruitment to civil service examinations. History can be useful in choosing career options in Government organization, or as a Museum Curator, an Archaeologist, Historian, or as a Teacher/ Lecturer in institutions.
