The last standard gauge freight train with steam power was run December 26, 1956. It was the local from Creede to Alamosa with D&RGW1151, a class C-48, 2-8-0.
I thought this would be a fitting last train to operate on my railroad before it was taken down.
Passing through South Fork
Water stop at South Fork
Leaving South Fork
Comming into Monte Vista
Passing through Monte Vista
Leaving Monte Vista, crossing US160
Passing Pleasant's Western Lumber between Monte Vista and Sugar Junction
Passing through Sugar Junction where Rio Grande interchanged with San Luis Central
Passing through Zinser and Monte Vista Coop's grain silos
Comming into Alamosa Yard
Stopping in the yard getting ready to uncouple the engine. The transfer yard to the right are packed with standard gauge box cars. Probably loaded with drilling mud, soon to be transfered to the narrow gauge cars on the next track.
On the turntable to be park away on a storage track. The steam era on Rio Grande is over as is the time to enjoy the layout I have been working on during the last 25 years.
