Research Experience

Final year project - Toward Robotic Dentistry: a Teleoperated Compact Robotic Manipulator

09/2018-present

Description: On top of the works of another FYP group last academic year and my RA project, a new version of prototype with expanded capabilities and specified functions to get closer to realistic applications has been developed.

Methodologies:

ž Actuation: steel threads were used as the actuators of robotic arm, so that motors could be detached from the arm structure and arranged somewhere else

ž Structural configuration: the link lengths and joint angle range were designed that were similar to human arm, which is asymmetric, in order that the robotic arm would theoretically be able to cover the working spaces of a real human arm

ž Control scheme: a haptic device was utilized as signal input equipment; inverse kinematics was solved by a personal computer; haptic device, PC and motor control board communicated through series port.

ž Prototyping: PLA 3D-printing was utilized on most of the parts; two parts carrying heavy load were ordered from external manufacturer, made with aluminum

Major deliverable:

A 6-DOF robotic manipulator prototype was built.

A paper based on this project has been submitted to IEEE-CYBER for review: Yufu Tao#, Tianyi Zhang#, Wenyutian Xu#, Ho-Yin Tsang, Jing Li, Zheng Wang*, “A Compact Asymmetrical Manipulator for Robotic Dentistry” (# co-first author, * corresponding author)

RA Experience-Research on a Dentistry Robotic Arm 06/2018-08/2018

Description: designed prototypes of a mechanism providing a double-eyed view with simple devices available on e-commerce websites

Duties:

ž Used SolidWorks to design the supporting structures which integrated purchased devices to provide a closeup view of inside mouths for the robotic arm operators, and created the prototype with 3D printer

ž Modified the prototype model to improve its structural stiffness

Robomaster 2018 Robotic Competition 07/2018

Description: designed a “hero” robot (fetch bullets, sort and supply bullets to its cannons, aim and shoot, move on the battle field, withstand crashes and strikes from four ground directions), and earned the 2nd Prize in International Regional Competition and 3rd Prize in Wild Card Competition

Duties:

ž Designed the overall layout of robot vehicle and assigned spaces on the robot vehicle to different sub-systems

ž Devised mechanical structures of the sub-systems (bullet box fetching sub-system, bullet sorting and supplying sub-system, chassis) on SolidWorks and tested prototypes

ž Improved sub-systems and integrated all sub-systems to form the whole robot vehicle based on the designs of chassis

ž Generated engineering drawings, manually processed parts and assembled them

ž Conducted the operator training sessions and made further slight and necessary modifications according to feedbacks from operators

ž Provided maintenance and on-site repairments to handle the battle damages

Internship Experience

Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. - Renhe Engine Plant in Shunyi, Beijing 12/2016-01/2017

ž Studied the processing stages of crank shaft and the flow charts, production rate, defects managements process, lay-out design, personnel managements, safety and security regulations used in the plant

ž Assisted the head of plant on safety and security inspections

Extracurricular Activities

Conferee, East Asia Model United Nations Conference 2017, held by the University of Macao 04/2017

ž Served as the Chairman of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

ž Drafted background guide and an academic update material about media exposures of events related to the topic, for the delegates of the council, and presided all the meeting sessions

Volunteer Teacher, Beyond the Pivot (NGO registered in Hong Kong) 05/2016-06/2016

ž Taught the course Social and Politics (6 teaching hours) in Shunli Shiyan High School in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region

ž Worked as a teaching assistant in evening self-study sessions of grade 9
