Josh was born May 6, 1884 in Litchfield, Kentucky. He married Edna Blue at a young age, and with her fathered John (Hubert Elton), Grace, and a little boy who passed in infancy. Josh married Lula Armentia Christy in 1911 and fathered Alvin, Vera (Tot), Vivian, Marvin, Verva (Beedy), Noal, Josh (JW), Johnnie Joe (Jack), and Lula Mae (Lou).

Josh farmed, and as Verva told it, all his kids "learned to work early in life. When anyone was sick or needed help, Dad was always there." He passed in 1961, remembered as a fun and honest teacher to his children.
